French football legend Zinedine Zidane's son Luca said on Wednesday he is “proud” to represent Algeria ahead of the north African country's World Cup qualifier against Somalia.

Luca Zidane, the 27-year-old son of French football legend Zinedine Zidane, has expressed his pride in representing Algeria in the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Somalia.

Here's what we know:

Why Algeria?: Luca chose to represent Algeria because his grandparents were born there, despite having played for France's youth team.

First Call-Up: He received his first call-up for Algeria in a 26-man squad for the World Cup qualifiers.

Objective: Luca's focus is on helping Algeria win against Somalia to qualify for the World Cup, saying, “The first objective, it's tomorrow, it's Somalia and to win to qualify for the World Cup.”

Family Support: His family, including his grandfather, are proud of his decision to represent Algeria. Luca emphasized that his father, Zinedine Zidane, had his own journey and career, and he is focused on his own path.

Current Team: Luca plays as a goalkeeper for Spanish second-tier side Granada.

Luca's decision to represent Algeria highlights the importance of heritage and family ties in shaping an athlete's identity and career choices.

“I'm very happy to be here. It makes me proud and I will give everything at 100 percent to make the Algerian people proud,“ the goalkeeper told a press conference in Oran.

Luca Zidane, son of football legend Zinedine Zidane, has switched his allegiance to Algeria, the country of his grandparents' origin. The 27-year-old goalkeeper, who currently plays for Granada in the Spanish second division, changed his sporting nationality last month and received his first call-up for Algeria's upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Somalia and Uganda.

Luca Zidane has represented France at various youth levels, including the Under-17 team that won the European Championship in 2015. However, he chose to switch to Algeria, where his paternal grandparents originated from the Kabylie region. This decision allows him to play for Algeria in international competitions.

Luca Zidane will compete with other goalkeepers, Alexis Guendouz and Osama Benbot, for a spot in Algeria's starting lineup. The team's coach, Vladimir Petkovic, will decide who will play in the World Cup qualifiers against Somalia and Uganda. Algeria needs a win in these matches to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

“All my family are proud of me and back my choice, my grandfather is happy that I'm in Algeria and that I've made this decision,” he added.

Luca Zidane, son of French football legend Zinedine Zidane, is focused on his own football journey with Algeria. When asked about following in his father's footsteps, Luca said, “His father, who was a World Cup winner for France in 1998, had his journey, his career. As for me, I have my journey, my career.” This mindset reflects his determination to forge his own path in the sport.

With Algeria's World Cup qualification hopes on the line, Luca emphasized the importance of their upcoming match against Somalia, saying, “The first objective, it's tomorrow, it's Somalia and to win to qualify for the World Cup.” A win against Somalia would see Algeria become the fourth African team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Currently, Algeria tops Group G with 19 points, four points ahead of Uganda and Mozambique.
