LaLiga: Xabi Alonso Sides with Players Over Miami Game
Real Madrid's Xabi Alonso has thrown his support behind La Liga players protesting the decision to host Barcelona's away game at Villarreal in Miami, calling the protests “positive” and emphasizing the lack of consultation among clubs.
“There hasn't been unanimity or consultation for it to be played on neutral ground. The protests are positive, and that sentiment is positive...”
Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso has thrown his support behind La Liga players protesting the decision to hold Barcelona's away game at Villarreal in Miami. The match, scheduled for December 20, will mark the first European league fixture to be held abroad.
“We are against the match,” Alonso said, emphasizing that the decision lacks unanimity and consultation among teams. “We believe it distorts the competition.” The Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE) has called for a symbolic protest at the start of every La Liga match this week, with players from Oviedo and Espanyol already staging a 15-second standstill in their game on Friday.

Alonso's stance aligns with the players' concerns about the lack of consultation and potential impact on competitive fairness. La Liga leaders Real Madrid face Getafe on Sunday, with striker Kylian Mbappe expected to return to action after recovering from ankle discomfort. “Everyone who went with their national teams, except Dean Huijsen, has returned in good condition,” Alonso confirmed.
The Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE) announced a “symbolic protest” at the start of every La Liga match this week. During Friday's match between Oviedo and Espanyol, players from both teams showed their support by standing still for the first 15 seconds of the game. However, the protest was not visible on live television broadcasts.
The AFE's action is in response to La Liga's decision to host a match between Barcelona and Villarreal in Miami, which has sparked controversy among players and fans. The union is demanding more transparency and dialogue from La Liga regarding the decision and its implications for the players.
“We are against the match, we believe it distorts the competition,” Madrid coach Alonso told a news conference.
“There hasn't been unanimity or consultation for it to be played on neutral ground. The protests are positive, and that sentiment is positive.
“We believe it could happen if there were unanimity, but that's not the case.”
