“Truth is, I've hit a wall and I can't continue. I need a break...”
Daria Kasatkina has ended her 2025 tennis season, citing mental and emotional exhaustion. The 28-year-old, currently ranked 19th in the world, announced her decision on social media, revealing she's been struggling to cope with the demands of the tour.
Kasatkina's decision comes after a tough run of matches, including a demoralizing loss to Sonay Kartal in the Beijing China Open, which marked her third consecutive defeat. Her recent struggles on court reflect her mental state, with the player admitting she's been “far from fine” for a long time.
The Russian-born Australian's challenges extend beyond the tennis court. Kasatkina has been open about the emotional toll of switching nationalities, particularly the strain of not seeing her father for four years and battling to gain full Australian competition eligibility. These personal struggles, combined with the intense pressure of professional tennis, have left her feeling drained.
Kasatkina joins other players, including Elina Svitolina and Paula Badosa, who have also ended their seasons early due to emotional or physical strain. Despite her struggles, Kasatkina remains optimistic about her return to tennis in 2026, stating she's “strong” and will come back “energized and ready to rock.”
“I've been far from fine for a long time and truth be told, my results and performances show that, the fans aren't stupid, they can see it too,” she posted on social media.
“I've kept a lid on my feelings because I don't want to seem like I am moaning, weak or god forbid ungrateful or unappreciative of this amazing life we live as professional tennis players.
“Truth is, I've hit a wall and I can't continue. I need a break.
“The schedule is too much, mentally and emotionally I am at breaking point and sadly, I am not alone.”
Daria Kasatkina, a Russian-born Australian tennis player, has ended her 2025 season early due to mental exhaustion, citing the grueling tour schedule and personal struggles. The openly gay tennis star, who has criticized Russia's anti-LGBTQ+ stance and expressed her disdain for the war in Ukraine, revealed she's been struggling to cope.
Kasatkina joins other players like Elina Svitolina and Beatriz Haddad Maia in ending their seasons early to prioritize their well-being. Despite her struggles, she looks forward to returning in 2026 “energized and ready to rock.”
The 28-year-old, who has won eight WTA titles, including the Ningbo Open in October 2024, cited exhaustion and mental strain as reasons for her decision. She plans to return to the court in 2026, stating she'll be “energized and ready to rock.”
Kasatkina's decision echoes concerns shared by fellow players like Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz about the toll the tennis schedule takes on mental health. She joins other players, including Elina Svitolina and Beatriz Haddad Maia, in prioritizing her well-being over the remainder of the season.
