Nick Kyrgios opens up about his struggles with injuries and the possibility of retirement. Read more about his struggles and future plans.
“I can't do another surgery where you're out for another six to nine months...”
Nick Kyrgios acknowledges that his tennis career is coming to an end due to persistent injuries. Despite this, he plans to make a farewell appearance at the Australian Open, a tournament that holds special significance for him.
The 2022 Australian Open doubles champion and seven-time ATP title winner has struggled with ankle, foot, and wrist injuries, limiting him to just one ATP match in the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Kyrgios recently returned to Grand Slam competition at the Australian Open but suffered a first-round defeat and has been sidelined with a knee injury since March.
In a recent episode of “Unscripted,” Kyrgios shared his thoughts on retirement, stating, “I do know that I'm getting to the end of my tennis career now, especially with all these injuries. I can't do another surgery where you're out for another six to nine months.” Despite the uncertainty surrounding his final appearances, Kyrgios confirmed he intends to participate in the Australian Open, saying, “Yeah, I'll probably play the Aussie Open in some way. I'm not too sure what events I'll play, but I definitely will say goodbye at the Aussie Open at least one more time.”
Kyrgios also revealed plans to compete in two exhibition matches in December: The Garden Cup at Madison Square Garden on December 8 and a “Battle of the Sexes”-style contest against top-ranked WTA star Aryna Sabalenka in Dubai on December 28.

Kyrgios's struggles with injuries have significantly impacted his performance, causing him to miss numerous tournaments. Since making his first career Grand Slam final at Wimbledon in 2022 and following that up months later with a quarterfinal appearance at that year's U.S. Open, Kyrgios has appeared in just one of the 12 majors over the last three years.
The Australian tennis player expressed frustration about the prospect of undergoing another lengthy recovery period. “I can't do another surgery where you're out for another six to nine months,” Kyrgios said, highlighting the toll injuries have taken on his career.
Despite his uncertain future, Kyrgios plans to make a farewell appearance at the Australian Open. “Yeah, I'll probably play the Aussie Open in some way. I'm not too sure what events I'll play, but I definitely will say goodbye at the Aussie Open at least one more time,” he said.
Nick Kyrgios's career has been marred by persistent injuries, including issues with his ankle, foot, and wrist. These setbacks limited him to just one ATP match over the 2023 and 2024 seasons, a stark contrast to his successful run in 2022.
In 2022, Kyrgios had a breakout year, reaching the Wimbledon final and winning the ATP 500 tournament in Washington. He also partnered with Thanasi Kokkinakis to win the Australian Open doubles title. However, his progress was halted by injuries that required surgery and lengthy rehabilitation periods.
Kyrgios made a comeback at the start of this year, competing in the Australian Open but suffering a first-round defeat. He played a total of five matches in 2025 before being sidelined again due to knee problems.
While details are still being finalized, Kyrgios is determined to make a memorable appearance at the Australian Open. “I'll probably play the Aussie Open in some way,” he said. “I'm not too sure what events I'll play, but I definitely will say goodbye at the Aussie Open at least one more time.”
