Indonesia Bans Israeli Athletes from Gymnastics World Championship
Indonesian government bars Israeli athletes from participating in gymnastics world championship due to Israel-Palestine conflict.
“The Indonesian government has a firm stance that it will not have any contact with Israel until Israel recognises the existence of a free and sovereign Palestine...”
Indonesia has refused to issue visas to Israeli athletes for the upcoming World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta, citing its unwavering support for Palestinians. The decision comes amid intense opposition in the country, with many criticizing Israel's actions in Gaza.
The championships, scheduled from October 19 to 25, will feature over 500 athletes from 79 countries. Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Legal Affairs, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, stated that the government's stance is consistent with its long-standing policy of refusing to host Israeli sports delegations.
This isn't the first time Indonesia has taken such a stance. In July 2023, the country pulled out of hosting the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) World Beach Games due to controversy surrounding Israel's participation. Similarly, in March 2023, Indonesia lost hosting rights for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup after two governors objected to Israel's involvement.
The Indonesian government had initially considered allowing Israeli athletes to compete, but Coordinating Minister for Legal Affairs and Human Rights Yusril Ihza Mahendra clarified the government's stance. “The Indonesian government has a firm stance that it will not have any contact with Israel until Israel recognises the existence of a free and sovereign Palestine,” Yusril said in a statement.
Indonesia doesn't have formal diplomatic ties with Israel. However, Israeli nationals or their sponsors, such as Indonesian-based businesses or Indonesian nationals, can apply for a short-term visa under the “calling visa” procedure.
Israeli nationals holding dual passports can enter Indonesia using their other passport, according to Immigration and Corrections Minister Agus Andrianto. This decision comes after a formal request from the Indonesian Gymnastics Federation.
Minister Andrianto confirmed the development to AFP, but didn't provide further details. Meanwhile, the Indonesian Gymnastics Federation hasn't commented on the matter yet.
