Newcastle edges Nottingham Forest 2-0 in Premier League

Newcastle United have now won seven of the last eight league meetings against Nottingham Forest after beating them 2-0 at St. James’ Park in the Premier League.

“We will turn our fortunes around....”

Newcastle United's impressive form continued as they cruised past struggling Nottingham Forest with a 2-0 win at St. James' Park. The Magpies dominated the game, with Bruno Guimarães scoring a brilliant long-range goal in the 58th minute and Nick Woltemade sealing the victory with a penalty in the 84th minute.

The home team started strong, creating early chances. Joelinton had two promising opportunities, but it was Guimarães who broke the deadlock with his stunning strike from outside the box. Woltemade had a chance to score before Guimarães' goal, rattling the woodwork with a shot, but it was clear the Magpies were in control.

Nottingham Forest's defensive issues were evident as they faced two close calls. The first came when a Kieran Trippier cross was diverted towards goal by a Forest player, but goalkeeper Matz Sels made a crucial save to deny the opposition.

Forest's struggles with set pieces continued, a concern highlighted in their recent match against Midtjylland. A whipped corner kick found Dan Burn at the back post, who headed the ball towards Joelinton, forcing Sels to make another impressive save to keep the score goalless.

Nottingham Forest had a tough time in the first half, managing only one shot, which came from Morgan Gibbs-White's free-kick that was comfortably punched away by Nick Pope.

The pattern continued into the second half, with Newcastle dominating play. Forest's fortunes didn't improve when a defensive mistake gifted Nick Woltemade a scoring chance, but fortunately for Forest, the striker's shot was blocked.

Newcastle finally broke the deadlock just before the hour mark when Dan Burn's pass found Bruno Guimarães on the edge of the box. Guimarães unleashed a stunning curling shot that flew into the top corner, giving the hosts the lead they had been threatening to score.

Despite Sels' heroics, including crucial saves from Malick Thiaw and Harvey Barnes, Newcastle sealed the win when Elliot Anderson fouled Guimarães in the box. Nick Woltemade converted the resulting penalty, scoring his fourth goal in five games and extending his impressive scoring run.

Nick Woltemade continued his impressive form, scoring a crucial penalty kick into the top corner. This achievement makes him only the third Newcastle player, after Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer, to score in his first three top-flight home matches.

The 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest marked Newcastle's fifth consecutive clean sheet at home in the league, a statistic that will undoubtedly please manager Eddie Howe. Meanwhile, Ange Postecoglou's struggles continued, with Forest remaining winless after seven games under his management.

Pressure on Postecoglou

The win piles more pressure on Nottingham Forest manager Ange Postecoglou, who has now gone seven games without a win. Postecoglou's side has struggled to create chances, and goalkeeper Matz Sels was instrumental in keeping the scoreline respectable. Despite the loss, Postecoglou remains optimistic, saying, “We will turn our fortunes around.”

Head-to-Head Record

Newcastle United now leads the head-to-head record against Nottingham Forest, with 12 wins, 5 losses, and 3 draws. The Magpies have won seven of their last eight league meetings against Forest, including four consecutive victories

Current Standings

The win lifts Newcastle United to 9 points, moving them up to 10th place in the Premier League standings. Nottingham Forest, on the other hand, remains 17th with 5 points, just a point above the relegation zone
