Coco Gauff Gains Confidence from Wuhan Open Win Ahead of WTA Finals
Coco Gauff's Wuhan Open win has given her a significant confidence boost following a string of underwhelming performances. The American tennis star is now gearing up to defend her title at the WTA Finals in Riyadh.
“Growing up I liked the sureness of bounces and the sureness of knowing when I'm going to stop and when I'm going to go...”
Coco Gauff's Wuhan Open triumph has instilled confidence in her ahead of the WTA Finals. The American tennis star credits her victory to a boost in her self-assurance after facing a string of disappointing results.
Gauff dominated the Wuhan Open, defeating compatriot Jessica Pegula 6-4, 7-5 in the final to claim her 11th WTA singles title. This victory marks a significant milestone for Gauff, who hadn't won a title since the French Open in June.
With this win, Gauff extends her unbeaten streak on hard courts to nine consecutive finals, a feat last achieved by Serena Williams, who won 12 between 2013-2015. Gauff expressed her confidence in hard courts, stating they're the surface she's “most true to.”
“This definitely gives me a lot more confidence going into the WTA finals, after the way the mid-part of the season went for me, especially in New York,” Gauff told WTA media.
“It gives me a lot of confidence to try to defend that title. Obviously, winning it last year, I know how tough it is to do, so I'm just going to take it match by match and hopefully I can end up with the trophy.”
Coco Gauff has made history with her unbeatable record in hard court finals, winning all nine of her championship matches without dropping a single set in the tournament. This impressive streak includes her recent victory at the Wuhan Open, where she defeated Jessica Pegula 6-4, 7-5.
“I definitely think it's the surface I'm most true to,” the two-time Grand Slam winner added. “Growing up I liked the sureness of bounces and the sureness of knowing when I'm going to stop and when I'm going to go.
“A lot of people think (my best surface) is clay. I don't know my favourite surface. I feel like it's still going to be hard court, for me.”

Coco Gauff made history by becoming the first woman since Serena Williams to win nine consecutive hard-court titles. Williams had previously achieved a streak of nine consecutive hard-court wins between 2013 and 2015, and Gauff matched this feat with her victory at the Wuhan Open. This achievement showcases Gauff's exceptional skill and consistency on hard courts.
