Carter Gordon Leaves NRL for Super Rugby
Former Wallabies flyhalf Carter Gordon leaves NRL, joins Queensland Reds for Super Rugby. Carter Gordon's return to rugby union could be a game-changer for the Wallabies ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
“I'm stoked to return to the game I grew up playing and loving as a kid...”
Carter Gordon has bid farewell to rugby league, signing with the Queensland Reds after securing an early release from the Gold Coast Titans. This move marks Gordon's return to rugby union, where he made a name for himself with the Melbourne Rebels.
Gordon's stint in rugby league was cut short due to a rare spinal injury that restricted him to just one NRL game. The former Wallabies flyhalf was part of Eddie Jones' 2023 World Cup squad but seemed to struggle with the expectations. His return to rugby union brings excitement, especially with the Queensland Reds and the Wallabies' upcoming matches.
Gordon's signing with the Queensland Reds adds depth to their squad, particularly in the playmaker positions. With the 2027 Rugby World Cup on the horizon, Gordon's return to rugby union could be a strategic move for the Wallabies, providing them with a talented flyhalf.
“I'm stoked to return to the game I grew up playing and loving as a kid, especially with the opportunity to represent the team I grew up supporting,” the 24-year-old Queenslander said in a statement.
“I've watched both Queensland and the Wallabies from afar over the past year or so, and the journey they're on motivates me to want to work hard and contribute positively on and off the field.”

Gordon's return to rugby union is a boost for the Wallabies, particularly ahead of the 2027 World Cup on home soil. The flyhalf position has been a concern for Australia, lacking depth and consistency. Gordon's talent and experience could be a valuable asset for the team.
Tom Lynagh, who also plays for the Reds, started the three British & Irish Lions tests this year. However, at just 22 years old, he lacks physicality, which could be a concern for the Wallabies.
James O'Connor, a 35-year-old veteran, and Tane Edmed have started tests in the Rugby Championship. While O'Connor brings experience, Edmed's inexperience at the top level was exposed in some of his decision-making and execution. This highlights the need for the Wallabies to find a reliable flyhalf.

Ben Donaldson was named in the Australia A squad for the end-of-year tour last week. He was previously named as a fullback but played a backup role to Carter Gordon at the last World Cup.
Gordon, who earned eight caps in 2023, stood out for his robust defense and aggressive playing style, often taking the ball to the line in attack.
The Gold Coast Titans confirmed that a “comprehensive financial settlement” was reached with Rugby Australia to release Gordon from the second year of his NRL contract, paving the way for his return to rugby union.
