Ivory Coast and Senegal are on the verge of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup after a goal-filled match day. The Ivory Coast thrashed Seychelles 7-0, maintaining a one-point lead over Gabon in Group F. With a win at home against Kenya next week, Ivory Coast can secure their spot in the World Cup finals in North America.
Senegal is also nearing qualification, holding a two-point advantage over DR Congo in Group B. The Senegalese defeated South Sudan 5-0, with Sadio Mané and Ismaila Sarr scoring crucial goals. A win at home against Mauritania next week would likely seal their spot in the World Cup.
Senegal strengthened their Group B lead with a 5-0 win over South Sudan in Juba, while the Democratic Republic of Congo secured a 1-0 victory in Togo. This result maintained Senegal's two-point advantage over DR Congo. Senegal is on track for a third successive World Cup qualification after this win, and they face Mauritania at home in Dakar on Tuesday.
Ismaila Sarr opened the scoring for Senegal with a 29th-minute goal, heading in a cross from Iliman Ndiaye. Sarr also assisted Sadio Mané's goal early in the second half. Sarr then added a second goal, while Nicolas Jackson and Pape Cherif Ndiaye also scored in Senegal's 5-0 win. Meanwhile, DR Congo secured a 1-0 victory in Togo, with Cedric Bakambu scoring the decisive goal after an interception in the seventh minute, moving them to 19 points, two behind Senegal.
The DR Congo concludes their campaign at home against Sudan on Tuesday. If they fail to overtake Senegal, they'll aim to be one of the top four runners-up from the nine qualifying groups, securing a spot in the African playoff in November. A successful playoff could lead to an intercontinental playoff in March for a chance to qualify for the World Cup finals in Canada, Mexico, and the US.
