Daniil Medvedev and his coach Gilles Cervara have parted ways after eight years, following Medvedev's dismal first-round exit at the US Open. Medvedev's loss to Benjamin Bonzi in a five-set match marked a low point in his career, with the Russian tennis star eventually losing 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(5), 0-6, 6-4.
The decision to end their partnership came after Medvedev had a woeful run in Grand Slams this year. He lost in the first round at three of the four majors and in the second round at the other. Medvedev's struggles have seen him fall to his lowest ranking since 2019, expected to drop to at least World No. 16 or possibly lower.
Both Medvedev and Cervara expressed gratitude for their time working together. Cervara thanked Medvedev for the opportunity to coach him, saying, “Daniil, our fantastic eight-season adventure together comes to an end... I am grateful and happy for all the great things and wonderful experiences we were able to experience together on the court.” Medvedev reciprocated, thanking Cervara for guiding him through the years and helping him reach World No. 1 ranking.
Medvedev's US Open meltdown also earned him a $42,500 fine. The partnership between Medvedev and Cervara, who was named ATP Coach of the Year in 2019, yielded 20 titles, including the 2021 US Open and the 2020 ATP Finals.
Daniil Medvedev praised his former coach, Gilles Cervara, who was named ATP Coach of the Year in 2019. Under Cervara's guidance, Medvedev secured 20 titles, including the 2021 U.S. Open and the 2020 ATP Finals.
