Guardiola's city aims to bounce back

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola discusses his team's defensive approach against Arsenal and their progress in the Premier League.

“We don't want it, but sometimes it happens. One time in 10 years is not bad, right?”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes his team has made significant progress after a trophyless last season. He stated that the squad has “recovered many things” that they missed previously, hinting at the team's potential for success this season.

The City boss has rebuilt his squad over the past two transfer windows, with a clutch of long-serving players exiting the club, including Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Ederson.

“I'm really proud of this fight,” he said. “We recovered many, many things that last season we missed. We have an incredible spirit.

“Of course, we cannot sustain for all the season to play in the way we played, and we don't want it. But I give incredible power and credit to the opponents, Arsenal.”

Pep Guardiola praised his team's resilience after securing a 1-1 draw against Arsenal, saying, “Especially since [Manchester United, a 3-0 win], we start to recover many things that define our teams for many, many years.” This suggests Manchester City is regaining its footing after a trophyless last season, a first for Guardiola in eight years.

Guardiola emphasized the significance of earning a point against a top-tier team like Arsenal, managed by Mikel Arteta. “I think the result is fair,” he said, acknowledging Arsenal's strong performance. City's defensive approach, which included switching to a back five, was a departure from their usual style, but Guardiola felt it was necessary given the circumstances.

The match saw Erling Haaland score early for City, but Gabriel Martinelli's stoppage-time equalizer denied them the win. Despite City's uncharacteristically low 32.8% possession, Guardiola expressed pride in his team's ability to adapt and secure a point. “We don't want it, but sometimes it happens. One time in 10 years is not bad, right?” he quipped.

“We can do better, yeah, we do it,” he added. “We could do a few things, many decisions, yeah, we do it.

“And we have to play a little bit more with the opponent, yes, we will do it. But first comes the spirit that we have shown this week.

“And we have to take care, this kind of thing, like a father, a mother takes care of their son.”

Manchester City currently sits in ninth place in the Premier League standings with 7 points from 5 matches, trailing Liverpool, the league leaders, by 8 points. Given their recent performance, it's a challenging start to the season for Pep Guardiola's team.

Recent Standings:

Premier League: 9th place, 7 points from 5 matches
  • Home: 14th place, 3 points from 2 matches
  • Away: 5th place, 4 points from 3 matches
Recent Form: 2 wins, 2 losses, 1 draw

Under Guardiola, Manchester City has enjoyed significant success, including four League Cup titles. However, the current season's standings suggest the team needs to regroup and strategize to catch up with Liverpool and other top contenders
