Jose Mourinho returns to Benfica as head coach, 25 years after his first stint. His contract runs until the end of the 2026/27 season, with an option for early termination.
“I feel a huge responsibility, but I feel more alive than ever. I want to win competitions...”
Jose Mourinho has been appointed as the new head coach of Benfica, marking his return to the club 25 years after his initial stint. The 62-year-old Portuguese coach will succeed Bruno Lage, who was dismissed following the team's loss to Qarabag in the Champions League.
In a significant move, Jose Mourinho has been confirmed as the new manager of Benfica, bringing an end to speculation about the club's future leadership. The appointment comes after Benfica parted ways with Bruno Lage, citing the need for a change in direction.
Benfica has officially announced Jose Mourinho as its new head coach, welcoming him back to the Estadio da Luz after a 25-year absence. Mourinho's appointment follows the departure of Bruno Lage, who was relieved of his duties after a disappointing Champions League defeat.
“I'm the coach of one of the biggest clubs in the world... I'm not important, Benfica is important, Benfica fans are important. I'm here to serve.
“I feel a huge responsibility, but I feel more alive than ever. I want to win competitions... My desire is to fulfil my two-year contract successfully.”
Mourinho's Benfica debut will take place this Saturday against AFS in the sixth round of the Liga Portugal. Benfica currently sits fourth in the standings with 10 points, trailing FC Porto by five points but having a game in hand.
In an intriguing twist, Mourinho's first European match in charge of Benfica will be against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, the very stadium where he gained international recognition during his time as Chelsea's manager.
