James Maddison Slams VAR and Referees After Tottenham's London Derby

Tottenham's Maddison blasts VAR controversy in West Ham match

James Maddison expresses frustration with VAR and referees after Tottenham's London derby against West Ham. Read more about the controversy and its impact on the match.

“Honestly the referees & VAR have had an absolute shocker of a start to the season. If that goal is disallowed...”

James Maddison isn't holding back on his criticism of the referees and VAR after Tottenham's match against West Ham. He took to social media to express his frustration over Cristian Romero's disallowed goal, which was ruled out for a foul by Micky van de Ven on Kyle Walker-Peters. Maddison described the start of the season as “an absolute shocker” for officials, questioning the consistency of VAR decisions.

The controversy began when Romero headed in a corner kick, only for referee Jarred Gillett to blow his whistle and award West Ham a free kick. VAR reviewed the decision and upheld the call, deeming that Van de Ven pushed Walker-Peters in the back and impacted his ability to play the ball. Maddison strongly disagreed with this assessment, arguing that if such contact is considered a foul, corners would rarely be taken without interruption.

Maddison's comments have sparked debate, with some agreeing that the goal should have stood. Ashley Williams on Match of The Day shared this sentiment, stating that VAR should intervene in such situations to ensure accuracy. Meanwhile, former PGMOL general manager Keith Hackett expects the FA to charge Maddison for his outspoken remarks, emphasizing the need for consistency in refereeing decisions.

Despite the controversy, Tottenham went on to win the match 3-0, with Pape Matar Sarr scoring shortly after halftime, followed by goals from Lucas Bergvall and Micky van de Ven. The victory showcases Tottenham's resilience amidst the debate over officiating.

“Honestly the referees & VAR have had an absolute shocker of a start to the season. If that goal is disallowed for a foul you will never ever see a corner be taken without referee blowing for something ever again.”
