Villarreal has signed Georgian international striker Georges Mikautadze has joined Villarreal from Lyon, with the transfer fee amounting to up to €36 million, including €5 million in potential bonuses. The French club announcing the transfer just before the deadline. The total fee includes €5 million in potential bonuses.


Lyon will also retain a 10% interest in any future sell-on fee, allowing them to benefit from potential future profits if Mikautadze is sold again. This move marks a new chapter for Mikautadze as he joins Villarreal.




Georgian forward Georges Mikautadze, born in Lyon, joined his hometown team last year from Metz after impressing at Euro 2024. The 24-year-old's transfer in July last year followed a standout performance with Georgia in the tournament held in Germany.


Mikautadze had a successful season with Lyon, scoring 17 goals in all competitions. He continued his form at the start of this campaign, netting one goal before his potential transfer.


Lyon agreed to sell Georges Mikautadze to alleviate their financial struggles, following the departures of Alexandre Lacazette and Rayan Cherki. The club's financial woes led to relegation to Ligue 2 in June, but they successfully appealed the decision.


As he prepared to leave, Mikautadze bid farewell to Lyon fans after their 1-0 win over Marseille, saying, “I will leave Lyon with a heavy heart.” Despite not playing in the match, Mikautadze addressed the fans, expressing his emotional attachment to the club.


Lyon will also receive 10% of the profit from any future sell-on fee. Mikautadze expressed his bittersweet departure from Lyon, saying, “I wanted to make history here, but that is football. The club and the institution must come first.”


Mikautadze joins a Villarreal side set to feature in this season's Champions League, marking a significant signing for the Spanish club. His transfer is one of the largest in La Liga this summer, with only Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid committing bigger fees for signings. The 24-year-old forward's market value is estimated to be around €22 million .




As a key signing for Villarreal, Mikautadze is expected to strengthen the team's attacking lineup, especially after the departure of key players like Alex Baena and Hierno Barry. With his skills and experience, Mikautadze is poised to make an impact in the Champions League and La Liga.
