Liverpool maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby. This win marks only the third time in history that the Reds have begun their campaign with five consecutive wins. Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah were instrumental in Liverpool's win, with Gravenberch scoring a crucial goal and Salah providing a majestic delivery that set up the opening goal.


The match was a closely contested derby, with Everton pushing hard for an equalizer after Gravenberch's early goal. However, Liverpool's defense held strong, and they managed to see off the challenge from their Merseyside rivals. This win extends Liverpool's unbeaten run in the league and solidifies their position at the top of the table.




The Reds flew out of the traps at a hostile Anfield, taking an early lead on 12 minutes when Mohamed Salah clipped a delicate ball in behind for Ryan Gravenberch, who made no mistake in lofting a sumptuous effort beyond a desperate Jordan Pickford and into the corner.


Liverpool were unrelenting at times in the first half, and could perhaps count themselves a little unlucky not to have doubled their advantage a few minutes later.


Salah was the architect for the first goal, and he was so nearly on the scoresheet himself soon after when he unleashed an effort from the edge of the box that flew narrowly over the bar. 




Liverpool dominated the first half, displaying unrelenting pressure that could have led to a two-goal advantage if fortune had smiled upon them. A prime example was when Mohamed Salah's shot from the edge of the box flew narrowly over the bar, a moment that could have sealed the win for the Reds. Salah, however, did play a crucial role in Liverpool's opening goal, expertly setting up Ryan Gravenberch to score with a delightful cross.


Everton struggled to create scoring opportunities in the first half, with one of their few chances coming from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who had some impressive work from Jack Grealish. However, Dewsbury-Hall spurned the opening, and the Toffees were quickly punished when Liverpool launched a swift counterattack that resulted in their second goal.


The influential Gravenberch was involved again, this time as the creator, threading a perfect ball through for Hugo Ekitike which the Frenchman duly slid beneath the onrushing Pickford.


Arne Slot’s men were almost the masters of their own downfall before the break when a stray Alisson pass was pounced upon by Iliman Ndiaye.


He crossed for Beto, but on the stretch, the Everton forward could only divert an effort into the relieved Kop. 


After halftime, Liverpool appeared nervous and struggled to maintain possession, allowing Everton to gain momentum. Their careless play was eventually punished just before the hour mark when Idrissa Gana Gueye scored a well-taken goal, hammering the ball into the far corner after being perfectly set up by Ndiaye. This reduced the deficit to 2-1 and gave Everton a lifeline in the match.


The goal sparked a renewed sense of urgency in the Everton team, and they began to press Liverpool more aggressively. However, the Reds' defense held strong, and they managed to see out the win despite the pressure.


The match became a thrilling back-and-forth contest after Everton's goal, with both teams creating chances. Jack Grealish played a crucial role in keeping Everton in the game, blocking Ibrahima Konate's header on the line. This defensive heroics gave Everton the lifeline they needed to keep pushing for an equalizer.


In the final 10 minutes, Everton continued to press and push for a goal, but they lacked the cutting edge needed to create clear-cut chances. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to score the equalizer, and Liverpool held on for the 2-1 win.


Liverpool dominated the match, largely untroubled in securing their 18th win in their last 29 home fixtures against Everton. This victory stretched their lead at the top of the table, setting the tone for the rest of the season. The Reds' performance showcased their strength, with the final score being 2-1 in their favor.


Everton's defeat marked the end of their four-match unbeaten run, handing bragging rights back to Liverpool. The Toffees struggled to create scoring opportunities, and despite halving the deficit through Idrissa Gana Gueye's goal, they couldn't mount a comeback.
