Coco Gauff and Amanda Anisimova secure spots in the China Open's third round with dominant wins, next opponents, and chances of lifting the trophy.

“She's a great player, and she's had competitive results with top players in the last few tournaments...”

Coco Gauff kicked off her China Open title defense with a commanding 6-4, 6-0 victory over Russia's Kamilla Rakhimova, securing a spot in the last 32. The world number three from the United States dominated the match, saving all 10 break points she faced and converting four of her nine break chances. Gauff's strong performance marked her seventh consecutive win on Chinese soil, reinforcing her status as a top contender in the tournament.

Gauff expressed satisfaction with her performance, saying, “I'm happy with how I played... I was just getting used to the conditions, but I thought it was a good match overall.” Her next challenge will be against Fernandez, who recorded a decisive win over Sakkari. Gauff's experience and familiarity with the Beijing court conditions could give her an edge in the match.

“I think the mindset is a little bit different just because when you play well at a place, you have a lot of confidence,” Gauff said after the match.

“When those tough moments happen, you feel the familiarity of the conditions from the years before that,” she said.

Coco Gauff powered through a tough match against Russia's Kamilla Rakhimova, ranked 89th in the world, winning 6-4, 6-0 in the China Open. The defending champion showed resilience in drawn-out games, particularly in the first set, where she faced some stern resistance from the 24-year-old Russian. Gauff's experience and skill ultimately paid off as she broke early in the second set and worked hard to save break points, closing out the match with confidence.

“I expected it to be close,” Gauff told reporters.

“She's a great player, and she's had competitive results with top players in the last few tournaments.

“I just found my rhythm and got in the flow.”

Next Challenge:

Gauff's next opponent will be Leylah Fernandez, who defeated Maria Sakkari 6-2, 6-0 in her match. The American will look to build on her strong start and maintain her momentum as she bids for a repeat China Open crown. Gauff's head-to-head record against Fernandez stands at 2-0, including a win at the Australian Open this year.

Anisimova's Road to the Title:

Amanda Anisimova cruised past Britain's Katie Boulter, winning 6-1, 6-3 to secure a spot in the China Open's third round. The 24-year-old world number four dominated the match, losing just four games. This impressive win marks a strong start for Anisimova since her US Open final appearance.

Next Challenge:

Anisimova will face home favorite Zhang Shuai, who snapped a 600-day winless singles streak in Beijing last year as world number 595. Anisimova has a previous win against Zhang, beating her 7-6, 7-5 in Hiroshima seven years ago. Their upcoming match will determine who advances to the last 16.

If Anisimova continues her winning streak, she could face top players like Karolina Muchova, Jasmine Paolini, Coco Gauff or Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals, semifinals or finals. A title win in Beijing would be significant for Anisimova, who has already won the Qatar Open this year. This potential victory would put her in an exclusive list with Aryna Sabalenka and Mirra Andreeva, who have also won multiple WTA 1000 titles in 2025.
