Camp Nou Renovation Update
The Camp Nou's renovation, which began at the end of the 2022/23 season, is ongoing...
Barcelona has announced that they will host Valencia at the Johan Cruyff Stadium, a small 6,000-seater venue at their training facilities, due to the delayed reopening of the Spotify Camp Nou. The club had hoped to play at their iconic home stadium with a reduced capacity of 27,000 spectators, but they have not yet acquired the necessary permits.
The Camp Nou renovation, estimated to cost €1.5 billion, is behind schedule, and the club is working intensively to obtain the necessary administrative permits to open the stadium in the coming weeks. The stadium's closure for building work began at the end of the 2022/23 season, with a planned partial reopening in November 2024, but this deadline was not met.
Barcelona's alternative option, the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium, was ruled out after a Post Malone concert left the pitch in poor condition. This has forced the club to find a temporary solution, and the Johan Cruyff Stadium will host the match against Valencia on Sunday.
“The club is working intensively to obtain the necessary administrative permits to open Spotify Camp Nou in the coming weeks,” said the club in a statement.
“Barcelona thanks its members, fans, and supporters for their understanding and support during such a complex and exciting process as the return to the new Spotify Camp Nou.”
The Johan Cruyff stadium, which typically hosts Barcelona's women's team, will stage the match against Valencia. With a capacity of around 6,000 spectators, the stadium will provide an intimate setting for the highly anticipated La Liga fixture.
The Camp Nou's renovation, which began at the end of the 2022/23 season, is ongoing. Initially, Barcelona aimed to partially reopen the stadium in November 2024, but the project timeline has been impacted, leading to the search for alternative venues for their matches.
Barcelona had been playing their home matches at the Olympic Stadium on Montjuic hill, but the recent concert by American rapper Post Malone has made it impossible for them to host their next match there. Due to the delays in construction and licensing issues at the Camp Nou, Barcelona has had to repeatedly push back their return date.

The Camp Nou rebuild, estimated to cost around $1.75 billion, is expected to be completed in 2026. The renovation project aims to increase the stadium's capacity to over 100,000 spectators. However, the project has faced setbacks, including permit complications and complaints over working conditions, which have delayed the completion timeline.
As a result, Barcelona has confirmed that their La Liga clash against Valencia will be played at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, a smaller 6,000-seater venue that also hosts the club's women's team. The club is working intensively to obtain the necessary permits to open the Spotify Camp Nou in the coming weeks.
