Unai Emery's plan to correct Villa's dire form

Aston Villa's Europa League campaign is about to kick off, but the team's Premier League form has been dire. Can Unai Emery turn things around?

“I was frustrated, but it is normal. I recover so quick. My recovery is watching the game again and analysing things...”

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery expressed his frustration with the team's recent performance was “normal” as he prepares to lead them against Bologna in the Europa League. Villa is set to kick off their Europa League campaign, their first since 2008, against Bologna, who secured their spot in the competition by winning the Coppa Italia.

Emery's team has struggled in the Premier League, failing to win any of their first five matches, scoring only one goal. Despite this, Villa will be regarded as one of the favorites in the Europa League, with the winner earning a spot in next season's Champions League. Emery, who has won the Europa League four times, is optimistic about Villa's chances, saying, “Our aim is to get in the top eight positions and we're starting tomorrow.”

The team's defender, Ezri Konsa, acknowledged that Villa's start to the season hasn't been good enough but is hopeful that they can turn things around. “Things haven't been good so far for us this season, but there are blips in a season and we're going through that now,” he said.

“We arrived three years ago with the project we did with the club. Monchi arrived six months after we arrived here. He was very good, but after two years he needed another chapter in his career.

“I am wishing him the best in his new chapter. We reacted quickly by bringing in one person I know personally. I have a lot of confidence with Roberto and he is coming to help us.”

“It is something progressively we were working on after speaking with Monchi. After the window finished, we spoke about it (him leaving). We decided with him and the club to do a normal transition. It changes nothing, only changing the man.”

Aston Villa's Struggle and Emery's Plan to Correct Course

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is working to correct the team's dire form, which has seen them sit in the relegation zone with zero wins from five games and only one goal scored. Despite the struggles, Emery remains optimistic about Villa's chances in the Europa League, where they will face Bologna in their opening group match. He believes the competition will bring excitement and potentially ignite the team's season.

In team meetings, Emery and his coaching staff are analyzing mistakes and working on strategies to improve Villa's performance. Defender Ezri Konsa acknowledges the team's start hasn't been good enough but is hopeful they can turn things around. Emery's experience in European competitions, having won the Europa League four times, could be crucial in guiding Villa to success.

Emery's focus is on building a strong team dynamic and improving performance through meticulous planning and attention to detail. His approach has shown promise in the past, and he'll be looking to replicate that success in the Europa League.

“With the players I have meetings and we are speaking openly about how we want to build the team, tactically and with our demands. Tomorrow is very exciting to play in Europe and then we will speak again about the league with Fulham.

“I was frustrated, but it is normal. I recover so quick. My recovery is watching the game again and analysing things. We have to try to use experiences to correct things.”

Aston Villa's Europa League Opener: Changes Ahead After Monchi's Departure

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has downplayed the impact of Monchi's departure, stating it “changes nothing” for the team as they prepare for their Europa League opener against Bologna. Monchi, who left his role as president of football operations, has been replaced by Roberto Olabe, a former Real Sociedad sporting director.

Emery emphasized that the transition was planned and that he has full confidence in Olabe, with whom he has worked before. “We reacted quickly by bringing in one person I know personally. I have a lot of confidence with Roberto, and he is coming to help us,” Emery said.

The team's current form has been a concern, with Aston Villa managing only one goal in their first five Premier League matches. Emery expressed his frustration with the team's performance, particularly in their last match against Sunderland, where he described their defending as “lazy.” However, defender Ezri Konsa backed Emery's comments, saying it's “a fair comment” and that it motivates him to prove his manager wrong.

Despite the changes, Emery remains committed to the project and is focused on kick-starting the season in the Europa League, a competition he has won four times. He believes the supporters will be excited about the competition, saying, “It is another competition to share special moments.”

“After the match I was angry because three points were important. I was frustrated and disappointed. When I analysed it, we played similar matches and won. After Sunday we identified clearly where we have to improve.

“I was frustrated, but it is normal. I recover so quick. My recovery is watching the game again and analysing things. We have to try to use experiences to correct things.”
