VAR Error in Danish Superliga: Danish FA Apologizes to FC Fredericia

Danish FA apologizes for VAR blunder in FC Midtjylland vs FC Fredericia match

The Danish FA apologizes to FC Fredericia after a VAR error in their match against FC Midtjylland, which ended in a 3-3 draw. The governing body admitted to a 'serious mistake' and acknowledged the impact on the game's outcome.

The Danish FA has acknowledged a significant VAR error in a recent Danish Superliga match between FC Midtjylland and Odense Boldklub, which ended in a 3-3 draw. Franculino's goal, scored shortly before halftime, was initially awarded, giving Midtjylland a 2-1 lead. However, the Danish FA later admitted that the goal should have been disallowed due to Junior Brumado's offside position when receiving the ball.

This VAR mistake has sparked debate about the effectiveness of the technology in the Superliga, with some coaches and clubs questioning its accuracy

The referee initially flagged Franculino's goal for offside, but VAR intervened and overturned the decision, allowing the goal to stand. However, the Danish FA later admitted that VAR made an error, and the goal should have indeed been ruled out due to Junior Brumado's offside position when receiving the ball.

“After the incident, one suspected that the offside lines had lost their synchronization, which rarely happens and can be easily corrected by the VAR team, provided it is detected in time. Unfortunately, it did not happen in this case in the heat of the moment.”

“A subsequent calibration showed that the striker was offside by 15 centimetres, which was also what the referee team saw in the first instance. The goal should therefore not have been approved,” says the Danish FA.

The Danish FA has issued an apology to FC Fredericia after acknowledging a serious VAR error in their match. “It is, of course, a serious mistake that has occurred, and we must first of all send a big apology to FC Fredericia, who unfortunately received a match-deciding ruling against them,” the FA stated. The error occurred when a goal was incorrectly awarded to FC Midtjylland, despite Junior Brumado being in an offside position.

“It was a human error that happened in the heat of the moment,” the Danish FA added, acknowledging the mistake's impact on the game's outcome. Fredericia had staged an impressive comeback, overcoming a 1-3 deficit with just 20 minutes remaining to earn a 3-3 draw. The FA's apology highlights the importance of accurate officiating in high-stakes matches.

“We have a basic understanding that mistakes can happen, but we should also learn from mistakes when they happen. The necessary measures have therefore been taken so that we can avoid similar errors as far as possible in the future, says the Danish FA.”
