“The tactics in doubles are very important. They are amazing players, we all know that, but in doubles...”

US Open Mixed Doubles Update

Defending champions Andrea Vavassori and Sara Errani proved that experience matters in the mixed doubles competition. They defeated 2022 Wimbledon singles winner Elena Rybakina and 2024 US Open singles finalist Taylor Fritz with a score of 4-2, 4-2. The Italian duo, who received wild card entries, showcased their doubles expertise, outplaying their singles-star opponents.

”The tactics in doubles are very important. They are amazing players, we all know that, but in doubles I think also the combination of the two players, we know each other so well, we are playing a lot of tournaments together,” said Vavassori.

“We're also playing for all the doubles players that could not be here, so we tried to do our best.”

About the Tournament

The US Open's mixed doubles competition has been reimagined, featuring 16 teams in a two-day event. This format brings a fresh dynamic to the tournament, with some of the most fascinating pairs competing against each other. Some notable pairings include Raducanu-Alcaraz and Pegula-Draper.

Other Matches

Other matches are scheduled to take place at the Louis Armstrong Stadium and other courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City. Belinda Bencic and Alexander Zverev were set to face Katerina Siniakova and Jannik Sinner, but Sinner's withdrawal due to illness led to a new partnership in the draw, with Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison taking their place.

Caty McNally and Lorenzo Musetti, a dynamic duo in the mixed doubles event, secured a 5-3, 4-2 win over Naomi Osaka and Gael Monfils in their US Open match. McNally, a two-time Grand Slam doubles finalist, brought her expertise to the table, while Musetti's singles experience complemented their partnership. This unexpected pairing made a strong statement, defeating the Japanese-French duo on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court.

Their victory sets them up for a quarterfinal match against the winner of Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud versus Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe. McNally revealed that she only had 60 seconds to decide on partnering with Musetti, saying, “I was like 'uhhh… yes,'” showcasing the spontaneity of their partnership.

“The tactics in doubles are very important. They are amazing players, we all know that, but in doubles I think also the combination of the two players, we know each other so well, we are playing a lot of tournaments together,” said Vavassori.

”We're also playing for all the doubles players that could not be here, so we tried to do our best.”

US Open's “Fan Week” Sees

Unprecedented Enthusiasm
A sea of enthusiastic fans flooded the streets around the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, eager to catch the action-packed mixed doubles matches at the US Open. However, their excitement was momentarily dampened by a logjam of cars waiting to enter the grounds, forcing some spectators to abandon their taxis and take a brisk walk up the Grand Central Parkway to get to the venue.

The US Open's “Fan Week” has drawn large crowds, with 216,029 visitors attending the seven-day event, marking a 37% increase from the previous year. This surge in interest can be attributed to the tournament's efforts to enhance the overall experience for attendees, including interactive fan zones, family-friendly activities, and live performances.

Krystyna Zaluski, a Boston native, expressed her excitement about attending the US Open mixed doubles event with her 13-year-old son for the first time, saying, “We're really excited. We heard it was like the Hollywood of mixed doubles.” She appreciated the simplicity of attending the event, stating, “This event made it so simple for us to come out here.” However, the star-studded lineup took a hit with Jannik Sinner's last-minute withdrawal due to illness. The world number one had to retire from his Cincinnati Open final against Carlos Alcaraz after just five games, and his US Open mixed doubles partner, Katerina Siniakova, was left without a partner after Sinner's withdrawal. Americans Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison stepped in to replace Sinner and Siniakova, and they'll face Belinda Bencic and Alexander Zverev in the first round.

About the New Partnership:

  • Danielle Collins: A former Grand Slam finalist and popular player on tour, Collins brings her singles expertise to the mixed doubles event.
  • Christian Harrison: A doubles specialist, Harrison has experience in the US Open mixed doubles event and has won two ATP doubles titles in 2025 with Evan King.
