Scottie Scheffler Ready to Defend FedEx Cup Playoff Crown
World number one Scottie Scheffler is set to defend his FedEx Cup playoff title at the St. Jude Championship in Memphis, while Rory McIlroy has opted to skip the event to prepare for a busy schedule later in the season.
“My game is in a good spot, and I feel like some extra practice at this point...”
World number one Scottie Scheffler feels refreshed and prepared to take on the FedEx Cup playoffs, starting with the St. Jude Championship.
“I took some extra time to rest,” Scheffler said, having recently won the British Open and PGA Championship. “I'm rested and ready to play.”
“I think just because playing major championships takes a lot out of you, so it was nice to get home and get a little bit of extra rest.”
Scheffler won the Open Championship at Royal Portrush on July 20th, securing a dominant four-shot victory.
He's since enjoyed his win with celebrations, including letting friends drink from the Claret Jug at a party at his home and taking the trophy to his home course, Royal Oaks. Scheffler also made a red-carpet appearance at the New York premiere of “Happy Gilmore.”
Scheffler's preparation for the St. Jude Championship in Memphis has been relaxed as he gears up to defend his FedEx Cup playoff title, which he won last year.
“At this point in the year, that extra practice is maybe only going to be draining for me a little bit, and that's something that I've learned to manage as my career has gone on,” he said.
“My game is in a good spot, and I feel like some extra practice at this point in the year can almost be detrimental in terms of just physical and mental fatigue.”
Scottie Scheffler tops the 70-player field at TPC Southwind. The top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings after the tournament will advance to the BMW Championship in Maryland, with the top 30 after that event moving on to the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

Masters champion Rory McIlroy, currently second in the standings behind Scheffler, has chosen to skip the St. Jude Championship, confident he'll still easily qualify for the BMW Championship.
McIlroy's decision wasn't surprising, given his packed schedule toward the end of the season. After the Tour Championship, he has the DP World Tour's Irish Open and BMW PGA Championship, the Ryder Cup, and events in India and Australia lined up.
