Canadian Open Semifinals: Osaka and Tauson Ready to Clash

Tauson and Osaka set for Semifinal Showndown

Naomi Osaka and Clara Tauson advance to the Canadian Open semifinals, setting up a thrilling matchup between the two tennis stars.

“I was told the day after I beat Iga, so I really wanted to come out and show my best tennis...”

Naomi Osaka and Clara Tauson will face off in the Canadian Open semifinals after both players secured dominant wins. Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, defeated 10th seed Elina Svitolina 6-2, 6-2 in just 68 minutes. Meanwhile, Tauson upset reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys 6-1, 6-4 to set up the semifinal matchup.

Naomi Osaka advances to the Canadian Open semifinals, where she'll face Clara Tauson after a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win over Elina Svitolina. Osaka expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “I'm just having a lot of fun playing. I'm glad to be here.” She added, “I think I'll be seeded in the US Open because I won my match. That was a really good goal for me. I'm just really excited.” This win brings Osaka closer to her goal of securing an eighth WTA title, her first since returning from maternity leave last year.

Naomi Osaka took a 3-1 lead in the first set and, after some back-and-forth breaks, closed it out in 38 minutes. She then dominated the second set, securing the win when Svitolina's forehand went wide, resulting in a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Clara Tauson dominated the match, taking the first set convincingly and then breaking Madison Keys with a double fault at the start of the second set. Tauson won 12 of 19 points on her second serves, effectively holding her ground and securing a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

Clara Tauson dedicated her win to her late grandfather, who passed away on Sunday. After defeating Madison Keys 6-1, 6-4, Tauson tearfully said, “Two days ago, my grandfather unfortunately passed away, so I really wanted to win for him today.” This emotional victory sets up a semifinal matchup with Naomi Osaka in the Canadian Open.

Clara Tauson said she was determined to honor her late grandfather's memory with a strong performance. “I was told the day after I beat Iga, so I really wanted to come out and show my best tennis for him. Hopefully he's watching,” she said, still emotional after her 6-1, 6-4 win over Madison Keys. Tauson is now one win away from her second WTA 1000 final, having previously lost to Mirra Andreeva in Dubai in February.

Clara Tauson is chasing her fourth WTA title, having previously won the 2021 Lyon and Luxembourg Opens, as well as this year's Auckland Open, where she defeated Naomi Osaka in the final after Osaka retired with Tauson leading 1-0. However, in their upcoming match, Osaka will be looking to exact revenge.

Clara Tauson holds a 1-0 head-to-head record against Naomi Osaka, having defeated her in the 2024 Auckland Open final. Tauson is also 2-0 against Elina Svitolina, beating her in three sets on clay in Portugal in 2023 and in a tight match at Dubai six months ago. With her recent wins, including over Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys, Tauson is one step away from her second WTA 1000 final.

Clara Tauson dominated Madison Keys, breaking in the fourth and sixth games of the first set. She carried her momentum into the second set, breaking Keys early with a double fault, and then held her serve without facing a break point. Tauson sealed the 6-1, 6-4 win with a love hold in the final game, wrapping up the match in 70 minutes.

Elena Rybakina and Victoria Mboko will face off in the other semifinal of the Canadian Open. Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, holds the head-to-head advantage after beating Mboko 6-3, 7-5 in the second round at Washington last month. The 18-year-old Canadian talent will look to pull off an upset against the more experienced Rybakina.
