Tauson (L) and Swiatek (R) exchanged a handshake after their intense face-off

Clara Tauson defeats Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek 7-6(1), 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open in Montreal. Tauson will face Madison Keys in the next round.

Clara Tauson pulled off a major upset by defeating Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek 7-6(1), 6-3 in the Canadian Open round of 16. Tauson, the 16th seed, ended Swiatek's winning streak and advanced to the quarterfinals.

This win marks a significant turnaround for Tauson, who lost to Swiatek at Wimbledon despite being affected by illness. Tauson has now avenged that loss and booked her spot in the quarterfinals of the Montreal tournament.

Clara Tauson outmaneuvered Iga Swiatek with her creative play and powerful shots, frustrating the six-time Grand Slam champion. Despite being broken in the second set, Tauson remained calm and composed, ultimately sealing the win when Swiatek's backhand landed in the net.

“It’s tough conditions here with the wind, but I tried my best to keep my head cool and keep working,” Tauson said after her 7-6(1), 6-3 victory, praising her own mental toughness in challenging conditions.

“Even though I got broken in the second set, I was feeling confident and I'm really happy about the win.”

Swiatek's defeat follows the surprise loss of top seed Coco Gauff to Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko in straight sets the previous day. Both Swiatek and Gauff will aim to fine-tune their games before the U.S. Open later this month.

The Canadian Open's competitive field has seen notable upsets, while world No. 1 and U.S. Open defending champion Aryna Sabalenka is not participating in the Montreal event.

Clara Tauson will face Madison Keys in the quarterfinals after Keys secured a thrilling 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Karolina Muchova. Keys saved two match points to advance in the tournament.

Tauson holds a winning record against Keys, having beaten her in their only previous meeting in Auckland in January. Notably, Keys went on to win her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open later that month.

Clara Tauson also shares a notable achievement with her recent form, having won her only tour title in Auckland, New Zealand, in January. In the final, she defeated fellow Montreal quarterfinalist Naomi Osaka.
