U21 Euros: England Held to Goalless Draw by Slovenia

England's struggles to find the back of the net continue as they draw 0-0 with Slovenia in the U21 Euros. Find out what went wrong.

England struggled to find the net in a goalless draw against Slovenia, highlighting their issue with lacking a traditional center-forward. Despite creating numerous chances, they couldn't capitalize, leaving them with four points from two Group B matches in the Under-21 Euros.

The Young Lions generated significant scoring opportunities, with an expected goals (xG) of 2.40 compared to Slovenia's 0.56. However, their attacking play became predictable and lacking in creativity as the match wore on.

The 0-0 draw has England looking nervous ahead of their final matchday on Wednesday, pending the outcome of Germany's match against the Czech Republic on Sunday.

Despite a different venue, the intensity was similar to their first game against the Czechs. However, the Nitra Stadium atmosphere felt subdued, mirroring England's lackluster performance for much of the first half.

Slovenia's attack was spearheaded by talented forward Svit Seslar, who showcased his skill by testing James Beadle with a long-range shot and impressing with an acrobatic overhead kick, although the effort was flagged offside. Seslar, recognized in the UEFA Conference League team of the season, has been prolific with 20 goal contributions in 26 league games for Celje.

Despite being the superior team, England struggled with cohesion in the first half. Frustration crept in early when Harvey Elliott was booked for dissent in the seventh minute, feeling a foul on him was overlooked.

The Liverpool forward was England's standout player, operating in a disjointed front four that lacked chemistry due to being new formations in U21 internationals. Elliott created danger, hitting the post with a precise volley in the 36th minute.

Given the nature of U21 football, the lack of cohesion isn't surprising. With Lee Carsley having limited time to work with this group, finding the right balance in such a fluid system is a challenge.

Concerns Over England's Finishing

Liam Delap's absence, having joined Chelsea for the Club World Cup, was increasingly felt, especially given Slovenia had conceded three goals in their previous match, all scored by Germany's striker Nick Woltemade.

England's chances slipped away in the second half as their front four struggled to find the clinical edge needed to seal the win. Jay Stansfield, introduced with 18 minutes remaining, quickly settled into the game, attempting to stretch Slovenia's defense – a tactic England had lacked for much of the match.

Stansfield's impact was immediate.

Jay Stansfield scavenged for opportunities as Slovenia settled into a low block, ultimately securing a draw that pleased their coach, Andrej Razdrh. Razdrh praised his team's tactical performance, calling the point a “super feat.”

England's challenge lies ahead, needing to solve their goal-scoring issues against tougher opponents like Germany. Lee Carsley will expect a strong reaction from his team, hoping for improved luck and a change in approach for what could be a high-pressure match.
