Simeone's Atletico Aims to Bounce Back Against Alaves

Diego Simeone's Atletico focuses on next match against Alaves after falling behind Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone acknowledged that his team's title aspirations are all but gone, with Barcelona and Real Madrid vying for the top spot. Atletico, who led the standings at the halfway mark, now sit third, 10 points behind Barcelona and six behind Real Madrid, with five games remaining.

Simeone emphasized a game-by-game approach, focusing on their upcoming match against Deportivo Alaves on Saturday. Atletico aims to catch up, but for now, they're taking things one match at a time.

“We have to finish game-by-game in the best way. Barcelona and Real Madrid are in an important position to compete with each other and have a direct duel. We'll do our thing,” Simeone told reporters.

“We have to think about improving. Alaves have been doing very well in the last few days, with a good rhythm of play, a coach with clear ideas, as in all his teams,” he said of his fellow Argentine.

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone attributed his team's title slip-up to dropped points in away games, estimating they should have won “nine or 10 points” on the road. Atletico's home form has been strong, with only one loss, but they've struggled away, suffering four defeats and five draws.

Alaves, meanwhile, have shown improvement, winning three and drawing two of their last seven games to climb out of the relegation zone, setting up an intriguing matchup against Atletico.

Under coach Eduardo Coudet, Alaves have become a physical team, and they've managed to climb out of the relegation zone. They're currently two points clear of Las Palmas in 18th place. Atletico manager Diego Simeone acknowledged Alaves' bravery and needs, stating his team aims to exploit their opponents' weaknesses.

Meanwhile, speculation has linked Villarreal playmaker Alex Baena to a potential move to Atletico, but Simeone responded with laughter when asked about the player, offering no clear insight into Baena's potential transfer.

“You're taking me for a fool... If I answer that he plays spectacularly, that I love him, that he's important for the national team, you'll say: “El Cholo (Simeone) wants him,” he said.

*If I say he plays badly, you'll say: “El Cholo doesn't like him.” He's a great footballer, obviously!”
