Rohit Sharma Retires from Test Cricket, Continues in ODIs
India's Test captain Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket, citing no reason for the sudden decision. He will, however, continue to play One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for the national team.
India's Test captain, Rohit Sharma, has announced his retirement from Test cricket, effective immediately. He made the announcement via an Instagram post, sharing a photo of his Test cap with a heartfelt note expressing gratitude for the love and support he's received over the years.
Rohit will, however, continue to represent India in One-Day Internationals (ODIs). This decision comes after he had previously retired from Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) following India's triumphant campaign in the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies, where they clinched their second title.
Countless memories, magnificent moments.

During his illustrious Test career, Rohit Sharma played 67 matches, scoring 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties. He also had a successful stint as Test captain, leading India to the World Test Championship final against Australia.
”Hello everyone, I would like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket,” Rohit posted on his Instagram story.
“It's been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI (One-Day International) format.”

Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit's deputy in the Test squad, has previously led the team in his absence, showcasing his leadership abilities. However, given the injury-prone nature of fast bowlers, the BCCI might opt for a different approach to full-time captaincy.
Rohit Sharma concludes his Test career with impressive stats: 4,301 runs, 12 centuries, and an average of 40.57 from 67 matches. In ODIs, Rohit is a stalwart, known for his monumental scores, including a record-breaking 264 against Sri Lanka, the highest individual score in men's ODIs.
Rohit Sharma's Test career was marked by inconsistency, particularly in his later years. He struggled to replicate his success in the longer format, managing just one century in his last 19 innings. This drought led to a notable decision: dropping himself from a Test match against Australia in Sydney earlier this year.

End of an era! See you in the ODIs, Rohit 🙌 pic.twitter.com/rpuQsz1IeV
Despite these challenges in Test cricket, Rohit had significant success as India's captain in limited-overs formats. He led the team to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup and secured a Champions Trophy victory earlier this year. Upon his retirement from Test cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) paid tribute to him, posting on X: “Thank you, Captain. End of an era in whites...”
