Pep Guardiola's Future Plans Revealed After Manchester City

Pep Guardiola confirms he'll take a break from football after leaving Manchester City, but hasn't decided on retirement.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has announced that he'll take a break from football when he eventually leaves the club, but hasn't decided if he'll retire entirely.

Despite signing a two-year contract extension in November, extending his stay at the Etihad until June 2027, Guardiola hasn't ruled out returning to coaching in the future, though a break is definitely on the cards for now.

Pep Guardiola's tenure at Manchester City marks the longest coaching spell of his career, surpassing his stints at Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Under Guardiola's leadership, City has experienced unprecedented success, including six Premier League titles and a historic Champions League win in the 2022/23 season. However, the current season has presented challenges for the team.

“After my contract with City, I'm going to stop. I'm sure,” Guardiola told ESPN. “I don't know if I'm going to retire, but I'm going to take a break. How I want to be remembered, I don't know.

“All coaches want to win so we can have a memorable job, but I believe that the fans of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and City had fun watching my teams play. I don't think we should ever live thinking about whether we're going to be remembered.

“When we die, our families cry for two or three days and then that's it - you're forgotten. In the careers of coaches, there are good and bad ones, the important thing is that the good ones are remembered for longer.”

Manchester City, currently fourth in the Premier League, face a tough challenge to secure Champions League qualification next season, trailing leaders Liverpool by 21 points with four games remaining.

Despite a season of ”great learning,” City's dramatic slump has dashed hopes of a fifth consecutive league title. Guardiola's team remains in contention for FA Cup glory, set to face Crystal Palace in the final.

“I knew there would be a moment when we would fall, but we fell a lot,” he said. “We didn't expect to be so far, but we can't win them all.

“What we did during 10, nine years was exceptional, but now we have to sit down and learn to try to understand what we need to produce in the future.”

In December, Pep Guardiola stated he wouldn't manage another club after Manchester City, but left the door open for a potential role as a national team coach.
