Kyrgios Returns to French Open for Doubles with Thompson

Nick Kyrgios will team up with Jordan Thompson for the French Open doubles after Max Purcell's doping ban left Thompson searching for a new partner.

Nick Kyrgios wasn't initially planning to compete on clay in Paris, having last played at Roland Garros eight years ago. However, he changed his mind after Jordan Thompson's regular doubles partner, Max Purcell, received a doping ban.

“I was never really expecting to play here, but when Max Purcell got suspended due to doping charges, Jordan needed a new partner and asked me to join him,” Kyrgios said, as quoted by The Canberra Times, explaining how he ended up partnering with Thompson for the French Open doubles.

Nick Kyrgios will partner with fellow Australian Jordan Thompson in the doubles competition at the French Open, marking his return to the tournament for the first time since 2017.

Kyrgios, 30, has struggled with injuries, including issues with his foot, knee, and wrist, since his surprise run to the 2022 Wimbledon final. He has played limited singles matches this year, with his sole win coming at the Miami Open in March.

“We've played at the French Open before, so it'll be good to get out there and play with another fellow Aussie and have a bit of fun.”

Although Nick Kyrgios hasn't won a Grand Slam singles title, he has experienced success in doubles, winning the 2022 Australian Open with Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Kyrgios is known for his natural talent and outspoken personality, making him a major draw at Grand Slams. However, his forthright nature has also led to controversy. Despite uncertainty about his long-term future in tennis, he's expected to return to singles competition during the grass-court season next month, ahead of Wimbledon.

The French Open is set to begin on May 25.
