IPL Match Abandoned: Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals Match Called Off Due to Floodlight Failure

The IPL match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was abandoned due to floodlight failure at the HPCA stadium in Dharamshala.

The Indian Premier League match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was abandoned midway on Thursday due to a significant technical failure. Punjab Kings were batting at 122 for 1 after 10.1 overs when the match was called off, with Prabhsimran Singh scoring 50 off 28 balls and Priyansh Arya making 70 off 34 balls before getting dismissed.

“Due to a power outage in the area, one of the light towers at the HPCA stadium malfunctioned. BCCI regrets the inconvenience caused to the in-stadium attendees,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in an official statement. The match was initially delayed by 60 minutes due to rain and was eventually abandoned after the floodlight failure.

The decision to abandon the match was reportedly made after air raid alerts were issued in nearby cities of Jammu and Pathankot, amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. Both teams and spectators were evacuated from the stadium as a precautionary measure, with around 18,000 fans safely moved out of the 23,000-capacity venue.

Punjab had batted for 10.1 overs, scoring 122/1, after opting to bat first.

The match's fate had been uncertain earlier in the day, and the concerns weren't unfounded - the Sunday match between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians was shifted from Dharamshala to Ahmedabad amid security concerns related to tensions with Pakistan.

Tensions escalated between India and Pakistan on Thursday, with blasts reported in Jammu, Indian Kashmir, amid a drone and missile attack claimed by India's military to be from Pakistan. This development raised concerns in nearby regions.

The cricket match between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians, scheduled for Sunday in Dharamshala, was shifted to Ahmedabad, citing logistical reasons, according to the BCCI. Dharamshala's proximity to Jammu and the regional airport's disruptions likely played a role in the decision.
