Formula 1 Champion Max Verstappen Becomes a Father

Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula 1 world champion, and partner Kelly Piquet announce the birth of their daughter Lily.

Max Verstappen, the 27-year-old Red Bull driver and reigning Formula 1 world champion, has become a father for the first time. He and his partner, Kelly Piquet, announced the birth of their daughter, Lily. The news arrives just as Verstappen was preparing for the Miami Grand Prix, where he was scheduled for practice and sprint qualifying sessions on Friday.

Max Verstappen and Kelly Piquet shared photos of their newborn daughter Lily on Instagram, captioning it: “Welcome to the world, sweet Lily. Our hearts are fuller than ever - you are our greatest gift. We love you so much.” Piquet, daughter of triple F1 champion Nelson Piquet, already has a four-year-old daughter, Penelope, with former F1 driver Daniil Kvyat.

Max Verstappen has joined Nico Hulkenberg as one of the few fathers on the Formula 1 grid. Hulkenberg, 37, shared his experience as a father, stating that it hasn't slowed him down; instead, it's been beneficial for his racing. With Sergio Perez and Kevin Magnussen no longer on the grid, Verstappen and Hulkenberg are among the select few balancing parenthood and professional racing.

“Once we step in the car - visor down, go out - even for me, I tend to forget what goes on outside because we're just so focused and so driven to perform and maximise,” he said.

“I just personally feel it (fatherhood) has added benefit because it’s giving me so much outside of work and outside of being in Formula 1. So I would even say it’s kind of been helpful for me, if anything.”

Mercedes driver George Russell, who has nieces and nephews, agreed: “They bring me so much joy when I spend time with them. And you've seen drivers in the past win championships and races who’ve got kids, so I don't see it changing anything on his professional level.”
