Finland's Narrow 2-1 Victory Over Latvia Keeps Quarterfinal Hopes Alive
Finland secured a crucial 2-1 win over Latvia in the World Hockey Championship, staying in contention for a quarterfinal spot.
Finland held on for a 2-1 win over Latvia, their fourth victory in five games. This result keeps Finland in contention for a quarterfinal spot with two Group A matches remaining.
Finland's momentum from their 9-1 win over Slovenia initially carried over, but they struggled in the first period, finding themselves on the back foot.
Despite outshooting their opponents 12-3, Latvia struggled to find the back of the net, with Kaspars Daugavins missing key opportunities. Juuse Saros made crucial saves to deny Latvia.
Finland broke the deadlock in the eighth minute of the second period, capitalizing on Latvia's inability to convert their chances. This followed a similar 6-0 loss to Sweden, where Latvia had also failed to score despite a strong start.
The puck deflected off Kristaps Zile's skate and into the net after Juuso Parssinen's attempt to cut it back to Patrik Puistola, giving Finland a 1-0 lead. The second period was marked by intense physicality, with nine two-minute penalties handed out in just over 12 minutes.
Despite the stoppages and scuffles, Finland maintained their 1-0 advantage heading into the third period.

Finland's power play in the third period finally paid off, with Mikko Lehtonen scoring with nine minutes remaining to double their lead. The Finns had struggled to capitalize on their man advantage earlier.
Latvia reduced the deficit to 2-1 with a well-taken goal just before the five-minute mark, Rodrigo Abols firing home a rebound set up by Rudolfs Balcers.
Latvia's desperate attempt to equalize by pulling their goalkeeper and earning a power play in the final minutes ultimately fell short. Juuse Saros made key saves, and Finland's defense held firm to secure a 2-1 win.
The victory solidified Finland's third-place position, five points ahead of Latvia. Latvia's match against Slovakia tomorrow will be crucial in determining fourth place, while Finland prepares to face Canada on Monday.
