Eredivisie Final Standings: PSV Crowned Champions, Two Teams Relegated

Eredivisie season finale recap: PSV clinches title, NEC secures playoff spot, and two teams relegated. Find out what happened in the final matches.

The 2024/25 Eredivisie season concluded with thrilling outcomes. PSV were crowned champions, while RKC Waalwijk and another team were relegated. The play-offs for European football spots were decided, and NEC secured a spot in the play-offs with a dramatic comeback.

The final matchday delivered decisive results, shaping the Eredivisie landscape for the next season. With the champions crowned and the relegated teams confirmed, the focus shifts to the play-offs, where teams will battle for a coveted European spot.

FC Utrecht Secures Fourth Place with 0-0 Draw

FC Utrecht ended their season with a 0-0 draw against Fortuna Sittard, comfortably securing their fourth-place finish. The result was largely inconsequential for Fortuna Sittard, whose season had effectively lost momentum after a significant development last week.

Fortuna Sittard's season had effectively been rendered inconsequential due to their ineligibility for a UEFA licence, required for European competitions, stemming from a missing external financial report. Despite sitting on 40 points, just one point shy of eighth-placed NEC and ninth-placed Heerenveen, they couldn't participate in the play-offs for a UEFA Europa Conference League spot.

Without a UEFA license, Fortuna Sittard was barred from participating in the play-offs, leaving them without any real objective for the season. The match against FC Utrecht reflected this, with a lackluster first half yielding few chances, and the second half was even more uneventful.

The game ultimately ended in a 0-0 stalemate. Notably, Sebastien Haller, who had rejoined FC Utrecht on loan in January, didn't get a farewell appearance in the red-and-white jersey, suggesting his departure this summer is likely.

AZ Secures Advantageous Draw

AZ secured a crucial home-field advantage for a potential play-off final with a 1-1 draw against already-relegated Almere City FC. This result could prove pivotal if AZ advances to the play-off finals.

Almere City had already sealed their relegation fate after a 1-1 draw against Fortuna Sittard midweek but still managed to take the lead through a well-executed play involving Junior Kadile and Thomas Robinet. However, AZ equalized in the 64th minute through Norwegian full-back David Moller Wolfe, ensuring they head into the play-offs in a favorable position.

The 1-1 draw against Almere City secured AZ's fifth-place finish, potentially allowing them to host the play-off final in Alkmaar if they overcome sc Heerenveen in the semi-finals. This advantageous home-field position could prove crucial in their pursuit of a European spot.

Almere City, meanwhile, concluded their two-year stint in the Eredivisie with a draw, their third in the last four games. Despite their relegation, the team can depart the top tier with pride, having given their all in their final matches.

RKC Waalwijk's Relegation Despite Thrilling Win

RKC Waalwijk's 5-3 victory over KNVB Beker winners Go Ahead Eagles wasn't enough to save them from relegation, marking the end of their six-year Eredivisie run. Despite the win, the team couldn't escape the drop.

The match got off to a lively start, with Go Ahead Eagles' Finn Stokkers scoring within four minutes. RKC quickly responded, however, as Tom van de Loo capitalized on a goalkeeper Luca Plogmann's error to level the score. The game remained highly entertaining, but ultimately, the win wasn't enough to change RKC's fate.

RKC Waalwijk faced an almost impossible task to qualify for the relegation play-offs, needing a miracle to overcome Willem II's three-point lead and significant goal difference advantage. Despite the challenge, RKC took the lead through Michiel Kramer's tap-in goal in the 48th minute and extended it to 3-1 via Yassin Oukilik's strike in the 70th minute.

However, Go Ahead Eagles staged a dramatic comeback. Jakob Breum scored his tenth goal of the season with a precise header in the 73rd minute, and just four minutes later, Evert Linthorst leveled the score for the visitors. Despite the thrilling finish, RKC's relegation was already a foregone conclusion.

Despite relegation being a foregone conclusion, RKC Waalwijk continued to fight, providing entertainment for the home crowd. They regained the lead when Mohamed Ihattaren scored from the penalty spot. Yassin Oukili sealed the win with a late goal in the 92nd minute, making the final score 5-3.

The result didn't impact Go Ahead Eagles' season outcome, as they had already secured a spot in next year's UEFA Europa League league phase with their KNVB Beker win. They finished the Eredivisie season in seventh place, with the European qualification already assured.

NEC Nijmegen Secures Crucial Win

In a high-stakes match between play-off hopefuls, NEC Nijmegen emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over Heracles Almelo. NEC began the day in a play-off spot, but several teams, including sc Heerenveen, FC Groningen, and Heracles, were hot on their heels.

The visitors thought they had taken the lead through Sami Ouaissa's goal just before halftime, but VAR intervened, disallowing the strike due to a foul in the buildup. Instead, it was Heracles who took the lead, with Sem Scheperman scoring after capitalizing on a rebound to put the home side 1-0 up.

NEC quickly responded to Heracles' lead, equalizing in the 55th minute through Sontje Hansen, who capitalized on Vito van Crooij's impressive solo effort. Just eight minutes later, substitute Basar Onal scored NEC's winner with his first touches of the match, securing a 2-1 victory.

The win boosted NEC's tally to 43 points, officially securing the final play-off spot. As a result, NEC will face FC Twente in the semi-finals next week.

PEC Zwolle's Win Dashes FC Groningen's Playoff Hopes

FC Groningen's chances of securing a play-off spot were dashed after a 2-0 loss to PEC Zwolle. This came just days after they had ruined Ajax's title hopes with a late equalizer. Younes Namli opened the scoring for PEC with a tidy near-post finish in the 44th minute.

The win was sealed by Dylan Mbayo, who capitalized on a swift counterattack initiated by goalkeeper Jesper Schendelaar's long throw. PEC's 2-0 victory earned them 10th place with 41 points, while FC Groningen finished 13th in their first Eredivisie season after promotion, missing out on a play-off spot.

NAC Breda and Willem II Share the Points

The derby between NAC Breda and Willem II ended in a 1-1 draw after a thrilling 90 minutes at the Rat Verlegh Stadion. Willem II knew a single point would secure their spot in the relegation play-offs, allowing them to avoid immediate relegation to the Keuken Kampioen Divisie.

NAC Breda took the lead in the 24th minute with a somewhat fortunate goal. Leo Sauer beat his marker down the right wing and found Dominik Janosek, whose weak shot was parried by Thomas Didillon-Hodl, only for Elias Mar Omarsson to tap in the rebound.

Willem II equalized just before halftime, thanks to Raffael Behounek, who capitalized on a fortunate rebound after Tommy St. Jago's header hit the crossbar. Despite the efforts from both teams, neither side could find a second goal, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

The draw marked the second consecutive stalemate between the two Noord-Brabant rivals. With this result, Willem II secured a spot in the relegation play-offs and will face FC Dordrecht next. NAC Breda, meanwhile, concluded their season with 33 points, finishing 15th.

PSV Clinches 26th Championship Title

PSV secured their 26th Eredivisie championship title with a 3-1 win over Sparta Rotterdam. The victory marked a triumphant conclusion to the season for the Eindhoven side.

Ajax's Win Not Enough for Title

Ajax secured a 2-0 victory over FC Twente, but the win was overshadowed by PSV's triumph in Rotterdam, which handed the Eredivisie title to PSV. Despite the loss, Ajax ended their season on a high note.

Feyenoord's Season Ends with Loss

Feyenoord, under Robin van Persie's management, suffered a 2-0 defeat to sc Heerenveen in their final game of the season. The loss marked the end of Feyenoord's Eredivisie campaign.
