Benfica Falls Short as Sporting Defends Portuguese League Title

Sporting Lisbon defends their Portuguese league title with a 2-0 win over Vitoria Guimaraes, holding off Benfica who drew 1-1 at Braga.

Sporting Lisbon successfully defended their title, securing the Portuguese league crown with a 2-0 victory over Vitoria Guimaraes on the final day of the season. The win was enough to hold off Benfica, who were level on points with Sporting going into the last matchday.

The title race had been intense, with Sporting and Benfica drawing 1-1 in their head-to-head match the previous weekend, leaving the outcome hanging in the balance until the very end. In the end, Sporting's victory sealed their position as champions.

Benfica's title hopes were dashed as they drew 1-1 at Braga, unable to better Sporting's result. Even a win wouldn't have been enough, given Sporting's superior head-to-head record.

Sporting secured the title with goals from Pedro Gonçalves in the second half and Viktor Gyökeres, who notched his 39th league goal of the season, capping off an impressive campaign. Gyökeres' goal sealed the win and the championship for Sporting.

Ruben Amorim, who is now the manager of Manchester United, led Sporting to the title last season before departing in November. He was succeeded by Joao Pereira, who had a brief and challenging tenure of just six weeks before Borges took over.

Sporting's victory marked their 21st Primeira Liga title. The club has the opportunity to complete a domestic double, as they will face Benfica in the Portuguese Cup final next Sunday.
