Australian Cyclist Michael Matthews Takes Eschborn-Frankfurt Title

Michael Matthews capped off his spring season with a win at the Eschborn-Frankfurt one-day race. The Australian cyclist out sprinted Magnus Cort Nielsen and Jon Barrenetxea to take the top spot on the podium.

Matthews, riding for Jayco AlUla, secured his 43rd career victory after his team successfully broke up the peloton on the challenging, hilly section of the 198km course.

Michael Matthews, a four-time Tour de France stage winner, extended his streak of winning at least one race in 16 of his last 17 seasons (excluding COVID-hit 2021) with his Eschborn-Frankfurt victory.

“I think my shape through the Spring was good, I just wasn't on the top step,” Matthews said, referencing his fourth-place finish in Milan-San Remo and fifth in the Amstel Gold Race. “It's nice to finish off this block with a win here in Frankfurt. It's a race that has really suited me for a lot of years and I haven't been able to win it, so to come here with the team and the way we rode – we rode perfectly – and to execute a performance like my team did today it was the icing on top of the cake.”
