Paula Badosa withdraws from Madrid Open due to persistent lower back injury. The Spanish world number nine expresses disappointment and hopes to recover soon.
Paula Badosa has withdrawn from the Madrid Open due to a persistent lower back injury. “I wanted to let you know that unfortunately I won't be able to play Mutua Madrid Open,” the Spanish world number nine announced on social media.
Badosa expressed her disappointment, saying, “I've tried to do everything possible until the last moment because you know how excited I am to play at home, but it's being a complicated injury.” She added, “I hope to be 100 per cent soon,” as she aims to recover and return to the court.
The 27-year-old has been out since the Miami Open in March and was scheduled to make her return in the second round at Madrid. With Badosa's withdrawal, Cristina Bucsa will take her spot in the main draw, facing Veronika Kudermetova of Russia.

Before the tournament, Paula Badosa hinted at her possible withdrawal due to a persistent injury. “It's been a tough injury, honestly, this one because it was totally different from the last one. It was an injury that was touching the nerves, so I was constantly having pain,” she told the WTA's site.
Badosa added, “Every day I'm feeling a bit better. Hopefully I will be my 100 per cent soon. Not right now, but soon,” expressing optimism about her recovery. The Spanish world number nine has struggled with injuries throughout her career, including a chronic lower back problem that led her to consider retirement last year.
Despite her efforts, 🇪🇸 @paulabadosa is unable to participate in the #MMOPEN and has just announced her withdrawal from the tournament.

Badosa's withdrawal follows that of fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who pulled out of the Madrid Open on Thursday with a thigh issue sustained during his Barcelona Open final defeat last weekend.
