Mark Williams held off a strong comeback by John Higgins to reach the World Snooker Championship semi-finals. The quarter-final resumed with both players level at 8-8, but Williams took control by winning the first four frames of the day to lead 12-8.

Higgins mounted a fierce comeback with breaks of 94, 114, and 67, pushing the match to a deciding frame. However, Williams ultimately prevailed 13-12 after Higgins missed a crucial blue ball.

“There was not one bit of nerves,” Williams, 50, insisted to the BBC afterwards. “I don't really get it. I've only had nerves a handful of times in my career.”

He added: “I wasn't thinking he (Higgins) would miss it. From 12-8 to 12-all I had not done much wrong and I was thinking 'What can I do?'

“It's just a pleasure playing now. We got the standing ovation walking in and everyone was cheering. You have to enjoy it because you don't know how many times you'll be coming back here.”

Ronnie O'Sullivan maintained a strong position in his quarter-final match, leading Si Jiahui 10-6 as the pair head into their final session. O'Sullivan is chasing a record eighth world title.

Meanwhile, Zhao Xintong secured a spot in the semi-finals with a 13-5 win over Chris Wakelin, becoming the first Chinese player to reach the last four.
