British prosecutors have announced that no criminal charges will be filed in connection with the death of American ice hockey player Adam Johnson. Johnson, 29, died after being cut by a skate during a match between his team, the Nottingham Panthers, and the Sheffield Steelers in 2023.

The Crown Prosecution Service said, “Following a thorough police investigation and a comprehensive review of all the evidence... we have concluded that there is not a realistic prospect of conviction for any criminal offence and so there will not be a prosecution.” The decision was made after a detailed review of the incident.
Adam Johnson, a former National Hockey League (NHL) player who also had experience in Germany and Sweden, tragically died in hospital after the incident during a match between the Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers.

His death sent shockwaves through the ice hockey community, prompting a global review of safety measures. In response, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) made neck laceration guards mandatory in all its competitions in December 2023, following recommendations from its medical committee.
