Brathwaite Exits as Test Captain, Hope Takes T20 Reins for West Indies

Kraigg Brathwaite steps down as West Indies test captain after leading the team to a historic win in Australia, while Shai Hope is named T20 captain.

Kraigg Brathwaite has announced his decision to step down as the test captain of the West Indies cricket team, as confirmed by Cricket West Indies (CWI) on Monday. This development marks the end of Brathwaite's tenure as captain, during which he led the team with dedication and passion.

Brathwaite, 32, has had a notable tenure as captain, leading the West Indies in 39 test matches. One of his most significant achievements was guiding the team to their first test victory in Australia in 27 years, securing a thrilling eight-run win in Brisbane in 2024. This victory showcased Brathwaite's leadership skills and his ability to inspire his team to achieve remarkable results.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) expressed their appreciation for Brathwaite's leadership and dedication to West Indies cricket. “CWI extends its deepest gratitude to Kraigg Brathwaite for his years of service as captain, recognising his dedication to West Indies cricket and his leadership in guiding the test team to a significant milestone,” CWI said in a statement. This acknowledgment highlights the respect and admiration that CWI has for Brathwaite's contributions to the team.

Shai Hope, the 31-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, has been appointed as the new captain of the West Indies Twenty20 team. In addition to this role, Hope will continue to lead the team in one-day international (ODI) matches.

Hope succeeds Rovman Powell, who had been at the helm of the T20 side since 2023. This development marks a new chapter in West Indies cricket, with Hope now holding a dual leadership role in both T20 and ODI formats.
