Real Betis Extend Winning Streak to Six with 2-1 Victory Over Sevilla
Real Betis extended their winning streak to six matches in LaLiga with a 2-1 victory over Sevilla.
Real Betis extended their impressive winning run in LaLiga to six matches, coming from behind to defeat Sevilla 2-1 in the fiercely contested El Gran Derbi. This achievement marks the first time Los Verdiblancos have secured six consecutive victories in the Spanish top-flight since April 2018. The win propels Real Betis into close contention with fifth-placed Villarreal.
The match began at a frenetic pace, characteristic of the intense rivalry between the two teams. Sevilla created the first significant opportunity within the opening 10 minutes, as Isaac Romero was played through by Albert Sambi Lokonga and managed to evade Diego Llorente, only to see his shot blocked by the former Leeds United defender. However, it was Real Betis who appeared more menacing in the early stages, with teenage winger Jesus Rodriguez standing out as their most lively player.
Sevilla struck the first blow on 17 minutes, courtesy of a precise long ball from center-back Loic Bade that found Dodi Lukebakio. Lukebakio showcased his composure, checking back before supplying the onrushing Ruben Vargas, who powerfully drove the ball home to score his second goal for Sevilla since joining from Augsburg in January.
Real Betis responded swiftly, equalizing soon after through a well-crafted goal. A patient passing sequence culminated in Pablo Fornals delivering an incisive pass to Youssouf Sabaly, whose inviting dinked cross was volleyed in superbly by Johnny Cardoso. This goal marked a turning point in the match, as Real Betis went on to secure the win and extend their impressive winning streak.
Sevilla's determination to level the score by halftime was evident, but their efforts were thwarted in first-half stoppage time. Real Betis turned the game around, courtesy of a clever pass from Jesus Rodriguez to Isco. The former Sevilla playmaker delivered an exquisite first-time pass to Cucho Hernandez, who calmly slotted the ball under visiting goalkeeper Orjan Nyland.

Despite trailing, Sevilla persisted with their calculated build-up play, remaining vigilant to the threats posed by Rodriguez. Isco came close to providing his second assist of the night, delivering a flighted free-kick that was met by Antony, only to be saved excellently by Nyland. Johnny Cardoso was the next to test the goalkeeper, curling a shot just wide. Sevilla head coach Garcia Pimienta then made the game's first two substitutions, introducing Saul and Akor Adams for Jose Angel Carmona and Romero.
The changes, however, failed to alter the dynamics of the contest, as Sevilla continued to struggle in creating scoring opportunities. Real Betis, on the other hand, seemed to be cruising towards victory, despite a heart-stopping moment when Adrian was almost dispossessed. Ultimately, Betis saw out the win relatively comfortably, amidst a feverish atmosphere at Estadio Benito Villamarin.
The 2-1 victory marked the end of Sevilla's 12-game unbeaten league run in El Gran Derbi, which had spanned seven wins and five draws. As a result, 11th-placed Sevilla will now shift their focus to their upcoming encounter against title challengers Atletico Madrid next Sunday. Meanwhile, a buoyant Real Betis will travel to table-toppers Barcelona the day before, filled with confidence and believing that anything is possible.
