Amorim Under Pressure: Manchester United's Injury Woes Deepen After Tottenham Loss

Ruben Amorim acknowledges Manchester United's plight after a 1-0 loss to Tottenham, but remains optimistic that things can change quickly despite the team's poor form.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim acknowledged that his team cannot “run away” from their current plight after suffering a 1-0 loss at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. This defeat marked United's 12th loss in 25 Premier League games this season, with Amorim having lost eight of his 14 league games in charge. The team's struggles have seen them drop to 15th place in the table.

The Portuguese manager expressed his awareness of the challenges facing the team, stating, “What you see guys and what you discuss every week, I also see. I have a lot of problems, my job is so, so hard here. But I stick with my beliefs.” Amorim emphasized the importance of confronting their struggles head-on, saying, ”You grow and you learn a lot of things. We just need to face it and not run away, that is my feeling.”

Amorim acknowledged the pain of losing so many games, but expressed optimism that things can change quickly. “Today will hurt, it is a tough pain to lose so many games, but then you can change things in a week,” he said. Despite their struggles, United appear to be far enough away from the bottom three to avoid relegation, but the team's poor form has cast a gloomy shadow over Old Trafford.

Manchester United's woes deepened as manager Ruben Amorim suffered a significant injury blow ahead of the Tottenham game, with versatile player Amad Diallo set to face an extended spell on the sidelines. This latest setback added to United's existing injury concerns, with Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte also absent from midfield due to injury. The substitutes' bench featured eight players aged 19 or under, with only Chido Obi making a brief appearance, replacing Casemiro in the 90th minute.

Amorim acknowledged the challenges posed by the injuries, stating, “We have young kids and we have to work with the young kids. We were not expecting so many injuries in one week. These things happen. Let's focus on the next game.” While injuries and the failure to strengthen the squad in the January window can be cited as mitigating factors for Amorim's struggles, defender Matthijs de Ligt refused to make excuses.

De Ligt emphasized that United's starting eleven still consisted of first-team players, saying, “We still had a starting eleven with first-team players. It's no excuse. It's not nice when you lose five players in one week, but that's part of football, part of life.” He also expressed his belief that fortune must be earned, stating, “I believe you have to deserve fortune. At the moment, apparently, we don't deserve it. I don't believe in fortune coming out of nowhere.”
