Ajax Captain Jordan Henderson Addresses Transfer Speculation and Criticism
Jordan Henderson has responded to criticism surrounding his recent transfer saga, defending his actions and addressing Ajax's financial situation amid links to a move to AS Monaco.
Jordan Henderson, the captain of Ajax, has strongly criticized the Dutch media for their coverage of his recent transfer saga. The 34-year-old English international was at the center of a heated transfer debate after Ligue 1 side AS Monaco reportedly submitted a bid for him last week.
The transfer drama unfolded on the same day as Ajax's final Europa League League Phase match against Galatasaray. Henderson, uncertain about his future at the club, handed the captain's armband to goalkeeper Remko Pasveer shortly before kickoff. Henderson has now expressed his frustration with the media's handling of the situation.
“Everything that has been said and written about this is 99 per cent nonsense,” a furious Henderson stated in the press room of the Johan Cruijff ArenA after Ajax's 2-1 derby win over Feyenoord. Henderson felt compelled to address the media frenzy surrounding his transfer situation, emphasizing his professionalism and commitment to the club.
“I wasn't myself last Thursday. I was emotional, but nobody needs to doubt my professional attitude,” Henderson clarified. He also expressed concern about the impact of the media coverage on his personal life. “I also have family, friends, and I have a wife and children. It's not nice that things like that get published then.”
Henderson's frustration was particularly directed at De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij, who initially broke the story of Henderson's transfer demand and later reported that Henderson had changed his mind and decided to stay at Ajax.
Henderson Defends His Actions Amid Transfer Speculation
Jordan Henderson, the Ajax captain, has addressed the recent transfer saga surrounding his future at the club. Henderson mentioned Ajax's financial situation as a reason behind the club's negotiations with AS Monaco. The 34-year-old midfielder is one of the club's top earners during a time of financial difficulties. “People constantly point out how much I do earn,” said Henderson. “And then a possible solution comes along and then I am put down as unprofessional.”

Henderson faced criticism for allegedly not celebrating Kian Fitz-Jim's 2-0 goal against Galatasaray and for not participating in the team's lap around the stadium after the match. Henderson defended his actions, stating, “That's not fair. Immediately after the match and the day after, I had talks with the Ajax club management. We decided that it would be best for everyone if I stayed at Ajax. I am very happy with that.”
Henderson joined Ajax in January 2024 after spending six months at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq. The Englishman is under contract until the summer of 2026. Despite the recent transfer speculation, Henderson appears committed to the club, and his decision to stay has been welcomed by Ajax fans.
