PSG Coach Luis Enrique Praises Team's Competition and Quality

Get the latest update on PSG coach Luis Enrique's thoughts on his team's winning streak and squad quality.

Marquinhos Sidelined with Thigh Injury

Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos will miss Sunday's Ligue 1 home clash against Saint-Etienne due to a thigh injury, manager Luis Enrique confirmed. The 30-year-old Brazilian has been a key player for PSG, featuring in all six Champions League fixtures and 13 of their 16 league games. Marquinhos sustained the injury during PSG's 1-0 French Super Cup win over AS Monaco last week in Qatar.

The club confirmed on Saturday that Marquinhos is still experiencing discomfort in his adductor. “Marquinhos will not be able to play,” Luis Enrique told reporters on Saturday. PSG face a challenging run of six fixtures in January, including tough clashes against VfB Stuttgart away and Manchester City at home in the Champions League. They will also face Lens and Reims in Ligue 1 after St Etienne.

PSG are currently 25th in the Champions League table, outside the playoff spots, after picking up just seven points from six games. When asked about the pressure to perform in the upcoming Champions League matches, Luis Enrique said, “The six matches in January, it's tough for all competitions, if we don't win, we will be eliminated. I always think the opposite.”

Luis Enrique Emphasizes Positive Mindset as PSG Enjoy Winning Streak

A Focus on Positivity

PSG coach Luis Enrique emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mindset as his team continues to excel. “I see a team that's very good in competing, why should I be negative? More positive (thoughts) for me and the team (as well) to face everything with a positive mindset,” Enrique stated. This optimistic approach has contributed to PSG's recent success.

Motivation and Team Dynamics

Enrique acknowledged that certain matches, such as those in the Champions League, require little motivation. However, he also recognizes the value of a strong squad dynamic. “Right now, I can say we are in the best moment of the season, I am starting to see that there are many players who can be starters,” Enrique noted. This competition within the squad has fostered a positive environment.

Marco Asensio's Future at PSG

When questioned about Marco Asensio's lack of playing time and potential departure in the January transfer window, Enrique remained coy. “My decisions speak louder than I do. I make decisions based on what I see in training. (But) no situation is irreversible,” he said. Asensio, who joined PSG from Real Madrid last season, has not featured in five of the team's last six matches.

PSG's Winning Streak and Squad Quality

PSG are currently on a five-match winning streak across all competitions, and Enrique is thrilled with his squad's performance. “This means there's a lot of competition (in the squad). For a coach, it's very positive. Whether this is reflected in the results or not, we'll see, but I’m very happy with what I've seen in recent weeks,” Enrique added, highlighting the team's depth and quality.
