Iwobi Reaches Milestone as Fulham Draw with Ipswich
Alex Iwobi became the fifth African player to make 50+ Premier League appearances for three different clubs as Fulham drew 2-2 with Ipswich Town.
Alex Iwobi, the Nigerian international midfielder, has cemented his status among Africa's top footballers after Fulham's 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town. By taking to the pitch against the Tractor Boys, the 28-year-old achieved a notable milestone, becoming the fifth African player to make at least 50 Premier League appearances for three different clubs.
Iwobi joins an exclusive group of African footballers who have accomplished this feat. The quartet of trailblazers includes Nigeria's Yakubu Ayegbeni, the country's all-time leading scorer in the Premier League, who had successful stints at Everton, Middlesbrough, and Portsmouth. Another Nigerian legend, Nwankwo Kanu, also earned his place in this esteemed group, having played for Arsenal, Portsmouth, and West Bromwich Albion.
Completing the elite group of African players to have achieved this milestone are two Senegalese legends: El Hadji Diouf, a two-time African Player of the Year, who had notable stints with Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers, and Liverpool; and Mohamed Diame, who made significant contributions to Wigan Athletic, West Ham United, and Newcastle United.
Alex Iwobi had already established himself as a seasoned Premier League player, having accumulated over 50 appearances with Arsenal and Everton before joining Fulham on September 2, 2023. His experience proved valuable as Fulham fought to avoid defeat at Craven Cottage, ultimately securing a thrilling 2-2 draw against Ipswich Town.
Iwobi played a significant role in the match, featuring for 63 minutes before being substituted for Rodrigo Muniz. During his time on the pitch, he demonstrated his attacking prowess, recording two shots and two key passes. He also showcased his passing range, completing 42 passes with an impressive accuracy of 83.3%. Additionally, Iwobi made 51 touches, attempted one dribble, and delivered two crosses, highlighting his involvement in Fulham's attacking efforts.
Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna shared his mixed emotions after the match, expressing satisfaction with the result while lamenting the penalties that he felt were unjustly awarded against his team. “It's a point gained from where we were this morning, against a good team, and also two points dropped from where we were in the 90th minute. So of course it's a game of mixed emotions,” McKenna stated. He went on to praise his team's performance, saying, “I'm very pleased and proud of many aspects of the performance... But to come away from home and play how we did on and off the ball, score two goals, means there are a lot of positives to take. We take the point.”
McKenna also expressed disappointment with the two penalties conceded by his team, feeling they were unnecessary. “I'm disappointed with the two penalties we gave away because they were not very, very, very threatening situations. They're probably both a little bit unnecessary,” he noted. The outcome of the match sees Fulham sitting in ninth place in the league with 30 points from 20 matches, while Ipswich Town, the newly promoted team, are in 18th place with 16 points from the same number of games. Fulham's next match is an FA Cup clash against Watford on January 9, with Alex Iwobi expected to play a key role in Marco Silva's midfield.
