Dortmund Parts Ways with Sahin Following Four Consecutive Defeats

Borussia Dortmund has sacked coach Nuri Sahin after a 2-1 Champions League loss to Bologna, their fourth consecutive defeat.

Borussia Dortmund has parted ways with head coach Nuri Sahin, the club announced on Wednesday. This decision comes on the heels of a shocking 2-1 defeat to Bologna in the Champions League, which extended Dortmund's losing streak to four games across all competitions.

The German club issued a statement explaining that Sahin's release was effective immediately, following an internal review of recent performances. “Borussia Dortmund have released head coach Nuri Sahin with immediate effect following an internal analysis of recent sporting developments,” the statement read.

Dortmund, last season's Champions League finalists, had taken an early lead against Bologna, scoring in the 15th minute. However, their advantage was short-lived, as the Italian side scored two goals in a span of just two minutes in the second half, ultimately securing a 2-1 victory.

Borussia Dortmund's dismal start to 2025 has resulted in the team dropping to 10th place in the Bundesliga, putting their chances of participating in next season's Champions League at risk. The team has lost all three league matches this year, compounding their woes.

Dortmund's managing director, Lars Ricken, explained the decision to part ways with Sahin, citing the team's dismal performance. “After four defeats in a row and only one win from the last nine games... we have unfortunately lost faith in being able to achieve our sporting goals in the current constellation,” Ricken stated. He acknowledged that the decision was painful, personally and professionally. “This decision also hurts me personally, but it was no longer avoidable after the game in Bologna.”

Sahin's tenure as Dortmund's coach was brief, lasting just over half a year. He replaced Edin Terzic as coach and was a familiar face at the club, having played for Dortmund's youth and senior teams. Sahin had also served as an assistant coach at the club since 2024, following a two-year stint as coach of Turkey's Antalyaspor. His contract was set to run until 2027.

In the wake of Sahin's departure, Dortmund has announced that Mike Tullberg, the current coach of Denmark's U19 team, will take temporary charge of the team for their upcoming match against Werder Bremen on Saturday.
