Slot Urges Liverpool to Stay Focused After 6-3 Win Over Tottenham

Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised his team's attacking performance in their 6-3 win over Tottenham, but warned against complacency.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot was thrilled with his team's impressive attacking display at Tottenham Hotspur, but also sounded a warning note against complacency. The Reds' dominant performance had them cruising 5-1 up, courtesy of a rapid second-half double from Mohamed Salah.

However, Tottenham briefly sparked hopes of an unlikely comeback, with Dejan Kulusevski and former Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke scoring to narrow the deficit to 5-3. Despite this minor wobble, Liverpool ultimately held on to secure a convincing victory, and Slot was keen to emphasize the importance of remaining focused and avoiding complacency.

Luis Diaz sealed the win for Liverpool with his second goal five minutes from time, securing a thrilling 6-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. Liverpool manager Arne Slot hailed the performance as the team's best away display during his tenure. “Until 60-65 minutes (in), I really, really, really enjoyed what I saw,” Slot told reporters.

However, Slot also acknowledged that his team's intensity dropped after taking a 5-1 lead, allowing Tottenham to mount a brief comeback. “But then you also saw that, no matter how much quality players have, they think they don't have to run anymore,” Slot observed. “In this league, especially against Tottenham because they are so good with the ball as well, they immediately start to create. And that's what they did, and they scored two goals. I was happy that the sixth one went in, to be fair.”

Slot accepted that his team's lapse in focus was understandable, given their commanding lead. “Maybe it is human that if you are 5-1 up, you think 'OK',” he said. However, he also emphasized that this complacency cannot become a habit. “I exaggerate a bit if I say they don't run anymore,” Slot conceded, acknowledging that his players still worked hard, but perhaps not with the same level of urgency as earlier in the match.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot pinpointed the exact moment when his team's intensity dropped, allowing Tottenham to mount a comeback. “Of course they still run, but they don't run to crosses anymore, they don't defend in front of the goal, where until that moment it was every time, wherever the ball was, we were there with two, three, four players,” Slot explained.

Slot emphasized the importance of maintaining focus throughout the entire match, warning his players that even a slight lapse in concentration can be costly. “You have to be on top of your game every second of the game. And if you're not 100%, then it immediately hurts you,” he told reporters.

Despite being pleased with Liverpool's position at the top of the league table at Christmas, Slot remains cautious, knowing that there is still a long way to go in the season. “Of course it means something because you always prefer to be where we are at the moment but you know just as well as I know because I've won the (Dutch) league once, how hard it is to win it,” he said, drawing on his experience of winning the Dutch league with Feyenoord.

“You have to keep on going, keep on going, every three days you have to be on top of your game, every minute of the game.

“That's why it's so hard to win it because it's not always easy to show up every three or four days.”
