Olufemi Oluyede has been confirmed as the new COAS by the Senate. Get the latest updates on his appointment and what it means for the country's military.
The Senate has confirmed Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) following a review of a report presented by Senator Yar'adu Abdulaziz Musa, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army. This unanimous decision by the upper legislative chamber is a significant milestone in Oluyede's distinguished military career.
Oluyede's appointment as COAS was previously approved by the House of Representatives, after he underwent screening by the Joint Committees on Defence and Army. With his confirmation, Oluyede is now set to lead the Nigerian Army, bringing his wealth of experience and expertise to the role.
As the new COAS, Oluyede will draw on his extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations, including his time as Commander of the 27 Task Force Brigade in Operation HADIN KAI. His leadership style is characterized by a focus on discipline, operational efficiency, and troop welfare, making him well-suited to lead the Nigerian Army.
Babajimi Benson, Chairman of the committee, presented a report during a plenary session, strongly recommending Lieutenant-General Oluyede's confirmation as the Chief of Army Staff. This recommendation was unanimously adopted by the House, with Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu presiding over the session.
Lieutenant-General Oluyede's confirmation comes after he served as the acting Chief of Army Staff, following the illness and eventual passing of Lt. Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja. Prior to his confirmation, Oluyede underwent screening by the Joint Committees on Defence and Army, demonstrating his suitability for the role.
