Manchester United players allegedly dropped plans to wear a pro-LGBTQ+ walk-out jacket before their 4-0 victory over Everton last Sunday. The decision came after Noussair Mazraoui, 27, declined to participate, citing his Muslim faith as the reason.

To avoid isolating Mazraoui, his teammates reportedly chose not to wear the jackets, prioritizing unity over the initiative. This move aimed to prevent Mazraoui from being singled out as the only player not supporting the cause, showcasing the team's commitment to inclusivity and respect for individual beliefs.

Manchester United's decision follows a similar incident involving Ipswich captain Sam Morsy, who refused to wear a rainbow armband, citing his Muslim faith as the reason for not participating in the Premier League's 'Rainbow Laces' campaign.

In response to the situation, Manchester United released a statement, emphasizing their commitment to diversity and inclusion while also respecting players' individual opinions. “Manchester United welcomes fans from all backgrounds, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, and we are strongly committed to the principles of diversity and inclusion,” the statement read. The club acknowledged that “players are entitled to hold their own opinions” and prioritized maintaining a welcoming environment for fans from all backgrounds.

“We demonstrate these principles through a range of activities, including support for our Rainbow Devils supporters' club, and campaigns to celebrate our LGBTQ+ fans and combat all forms of discrimination.

“Players are entitled to hold their own individual opinions, particularly in relation to their faith, and these may something differ from the club's position.”

Manchester United has consistently shown its support for the Rainbow Laces campaign, participating in previous seasons and the current one. Notably, Bruno Fernandes demonstrated his commitment by wearing a rainbow armband and sharing his thoughts on the club's website, emphasizing the importance of creating an inclusive environment for all supporters.

The club further showcased its dedication to the cause by releasing a video featuring Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans engaging in conversations with members of the Rainbow Devils fan group. This effort highlights United's ongoing efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the football community.
