Liverpool Goalkeeper Alisson Challenges Team to Forge Own Path

Alisson urges Liverpool to forge their own path and make history, rather than being compared to previous teams, including Jurgen Klopp's title-winning side.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has issued a rallying cry to his teammates, urging them to create their own legacy and make history under the guidance of manager Arne Slot. The Reds are being compared to their 2019-2020 Premier League title-winning side, but Alisson wants the current team to forge their own path and achieve greatness.

Arne Slot's Liverpool side is in a commanding position, sitting six points clear of second-placed Arsenal with a game in hand. As they prepare to face West Ham on Sunday, Alisson's call to action serves as a reminder that the team's focus should remain on their own journey to success, rather than drawing comparisons with past achievements.

Liverpool is on a quest to secure their first English title since 2020, and their impressive start to the season has positioned them as strong favorites to lift the championship. With 13 wins and only one loss in their first 17 league games, the Reds are riding high. As a result, fans are already engaging in discussions about whether the current team is as talented as the one led by Jurgen Klopp, which ended the club's 30-year title drought in 2020.

However, Alisson Becker, one of the few remaining players from Klopp's squad, believes that the current team under Arne Slot deserves to be evaluated on its own merits, rather than being constantly compared to their predecessors. Alisson thinks that Slot's men should be ranked independently, rather than being measured against a team that achieved incredible success under Klopp, including three Champions League final appearances and a Premier League title.

“I don't think it's too similar, two different teams. A few players still play in the team but we have a little bit different style now, more ball possession, before it was really straightforward: a lot of transition, a lot of intensity,” the Brazilian said.

“That team was really special, we achieved great things, it was the first Premier League title for this club in a long time. We achieved the Champions League together as well, the season before.

“I believe we don't have to compare ourselves with the teams in the past, we have to create our own history.

“We're not going to erase the things we did in the past that were really special and be always in the history of this club.”

“We have the quality to do something special and the most important thing is the commitment that is needed to win something is there, and the passion, the desire.

“We are hungry and we want to win every game in front of us and that's all we are focused on at the moment.”

Liverpool's 3-1 victory over Leicester on Boxing Day featured a 20-man squad, eight of whom were part of the team that won the title four years ago. Notably, Mohamed Salah is the only remaining member of the iconic front three that also included Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino. However, the arrival of Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz, and Darwin Nunez has revitalized the team's attacking line, with Salah now joined by these new talents to form a formidable force under manager Arne Slot.

Alisson Becker has been impressed by the impact of the new signings, as well as the hunger and determination displayed by the players who have yet to experience the thrill of winning a title with Liverpool. “We have a few players that are playing here long enough, that experienced the highest peak of maybe the Jurgen Klopp era and the lowest as well,” Alisson observed, highlighting the valuable experience and resilience within the team.
