A cyclonic storm is expected to hit India by Saturday, bringing heavy winds and rain. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is battling floods and landslides that have claimed several lives.
At least 12 people have lost their lives due to severe flooding and landslides in Sri Lanka, according to authorities. The devastating natural disasters have affected eastern and central parts of the country.
Rescue teams have retrieved the bodies of four children who were tragically swept away by floodwaters while riding on a tractor in the eastern coastal town of Eravur. Unfortunately, others remain missing following the torrential rains and flash floods.
The powerful storm, which is now moving towards India, has displaced more than 250,000 people in Sri Lanka, forcing them to flee their homes. The Disaster Management Center of the island nation has reported the alarming number of displaced individuals.
The severe flooding and landslides have caused widespread devastation in eastern and central Sri Lanka. The torrential rains and flash floods have left a trail of destruction, with many lives lost and thousands more affected.
According to the India Meteorological Department, a “deep depression” over the southwest Bay of Bengal may develop into a cyclonic storm. The storm is predicted to make landfall in the southern state of Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry on Saturday, bringing winds of up to 70 km/h (43 mph).
The Sri Lankan government has enlisted the army's assistance in relief operations following the devastating floods and landslides. Search teams are still scouring the area for two missing children and two men who were swept away by flash floods while on a tractor and trailer.
Deadly floods and landslides are a common occurrence across South Asia, but experts warn that climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of these extreme weather events. This alarming trend underscores the need for enhanced preparedness and mitigation measures to minimize the impact of such disasters.
