Equatorial Guinea's anti-corruption chief ousted amid sex scandal allegations, replaced with new appointee.
Equatorial Guinea's President, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, has appointed Zenón Obiang Obiang Avomo as the new Director General of the National Agency for Financial Investigation (ANIF), replacing Baltasar Ebang Engonga. This development comes after Engonga's termination and arrest due to a shocking sex scandal involving high-ranking government officials and over 400 explicit videos featuring their wives.
The scandal led to Engonga's downfall, and President Obiang swiftly acted to address the situation. As the leader of Equatorial Guinea since 1982, Obiang has demonstrated his ability to maintain control and make key decisions. Avomo's appointment aims to restore stability and trust in the ANIF.
In Equatorial Guinea, Obiang's rule has been marked by controversy, with criticisms of authoritarianism, corruption, and human rights abuses. Despite this, he has managed to maintain power and oversee the country's emergence as a significant oil producer. The recent leadership change at ANIF reflects Obiang's efforts to assert his authority and address internal conflicts.
Facts about President Obiang's Rule:
Longest-serving leader: Obiang has been in power since 1982, making him one of the longest-serving leaders in Africa.
Authoritarian rule: His regime has been criticized for its authoritarian nature, with limited opposition and press freedom.
Economic growth: Under Obiang's leadership, Equatorial Guinea has become a significant oil producer, driving economic growth.
A surprise search by ANIF officials uncovered compromising videos during an investigation into financial irregularities involving prominent economist Baltasar Ebang Engonga. This search revealed over 400 explicit videos featuring Engonga with multiple women, including his brother's wife, cousin, and the sister of Equatorial Guinea's President.
Following the scandal, Zenón Obiang Obiang Avomo was appointed as the new Director General of ANIF. Avomo boasts an impressive resume, having graduated with a law degree from the National University of Equatorial Guinea (UNGE). His extensive experience includes roles such as Magistrate Judge at the Malabo Institution, Director General of Contract Studies and State Markets at the Ministry of Finance and Budgets, Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance, Economy and Planning, and Secretary General of the Ministry of Mines, Industry and Energy.
